Alaska born and raised. Welcome! So cool to see new comers be so appreciative and great full for the land and state. It’s easy to take it for granted when you’ve lived here forever. It’s a special place for sure. Enjoy it here!!

Have you seen the channel 'simple living Alaska'? They are a great couple and they do everything you are wanting in Alaska. I wish you the very best in your new found adventure. Congratulations on the purchase of your new property. As you say it is very different from Arizona my advice is take it one day at a time.

The winter will be okay as long as you keep yourself active and keep a day/night schedule. As for driving, don't go anywhere in a hurry. Welcome to AK!

Wasilla is pretty cold in winter (colder than Anchorage and the Kenai Peninsula), but not as cold as Big Lake, Houston, and points north. The big weather problem with Wasilla is the howling glacier wind off the Knik Glacier that blows across the Palmer Hay Flats and Wasilla Lake! Don't know exactly where you are, but you may be sheltered from that. There's also (sadly) a lot of property crime - most people commute into Anchorage and on weekdays, several (pretty well known) criminal gangs prey on properties that aren't along the main roads. It's good that you've met your neighbors, because there's nothing better than Neighborhood Watch! In any case, forewarned is forearmed! Best of luck with your projects!

We are not in Wasilla, we are in an outlying small town! Thankfully our neighbors have given us a really great idea of the weather in our area and that to expect!

You didn't mention a high tunnel...do you plan on doing a garden this year and if so have you started your plants inside yet? Have you thought about drainage for snow melt and the erosion it causes? Any ideas about solar even small ones for electric fences to keep bears away some what?
@FiddleheadAcres2 жыл бұрын
We aren’t getting a high tunnel set up this year, no! We have too many other projects to try and manage a garden as well. Our neighbor used to clear land for a living so we are listening to him for drainage! We will probably have an electric fence around the garden but we do not plan on fencing the property.

Hi. Guys . I'm Dan from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. I saw you were leaving Phoenix to travel and settle in Alaska. I'm a carpenter/contractor. I have seen others move up there from the lower states . I follow their vids. Usually interesting . I will follow your journey, so if I give you some building tips , along the way , please don't take them as criticism. In the last 60 yrs. of building I have certainly learned some easier or more efficient methods of doing things. I have done a lot of work by myself , so you find many ways of holding both ends of the board per say. Good luck and stay safe.

I understand how you feel about Alaska because we live in Texas but we have property in Delta Junction, Alaska. My husband and I are going to be there in September. We also want to be off grid. I know the area you’re in and did you look at your property before you bought it? We flew up twice before we found the land we wanted.
