I don’t know if anyone needs to hear this but I feel it's right to say, so that no one else has to go through what happened to me. I took the TOEFL test a few days ago and it was one of the worst experiences I had to undergo. My screen froze during the writing section and I couldn’t scroll down to read the remaining passage during the integrated part. I called for the proctor for help and she IGNORED me for the better part of 50 minutes until the end of the entire test. The spectacle didn’t end there, as the proctor TALKED OUT LOUD on full volume when I had to listen to what I had to speak on during the speaking section. She continued talking through the speakers for more than a minute, during all the listening (even if she lied to the institution saying that she talked just to ask to lower the camera, that requires 3 seconds). I was so nervous and terrified as the sheer horror of speaking on something I could NOT hear. I had to compose myself and I did my best to speak as this joke of an “test” came to an end. This is incompetence and a scam. I immediately filed a complaint and sent them an email to open an investigation. It’s evident that “investigation” didn’t happen as ETS chose to not do their job like their LIAR of a proctor and simply took her word for it. My scores will stand and I was told I will not be allowed to retake the test for free. They chose NOT to review my RECORDED test. Choosing TOEFL was definitely one of the worst decisions I’ve ever made in my life. They’re morally bankrupt and shamelessly corrupt. Don’t let them mess with your future. I’ve said my piece, make of that what you will. And add that to all the complaints of other type you can find on this page (for example not receiving the scores in time).

I'm very sad to hear this. I've also read lots of complaints as I was preparing to take my exam next Monday. You're not the only one here, this has happened to many other people online. I'm praying that I don't get a bad proctor on Monday and everything goes as planned. May I ask you if I need a windows operating system to perform the exam? Or is it now compatible with Mac OS? The TOEFL exam at home was one of the worst experiences of my life aswell. I had taken the IELTS, but I was asked to take the TOEFL for a specific program in the US. The first issue on the day of my exam was that the proctor, who was not an English native speaker and was very difficult to understand, was utterly rude. But it was not all, at the writing section, the worst happened, my computer didn't allow me to type properly and the proctor didn't stop the exam until it was very late. Thus, I ended up with no time to complete task 1 because my computer had to be rebooted 3 times and I lost the 20 minutes it was supposed to last. What's more, I have been trying to contact the TOEFL in every possible way, but I was told they don't have quarters im my country, so I have to e-mail them, which I have done like 5 times without an answer. I DON'T RECOMMEND THIS TEST TO ANYBODY, IF YOU ARE FREE TO CHOOSE AND YOU ARE DECIDING BETWEEN THIS AND IELTS, GO FOR THE IELTS WITHOUT A SECOND THOUGHT!

I am still 3 weeks away from my test date . I Downloaded the ets browser and after the microphone test the screen popped up to enter exam ID and password. The proctorU ID didn’t work I was not sure what ID they mean ? Is it something I fill out on the day of the test only? Ets ID? Thank you

Yes, usually ur assigned Proctor will fill it up for you on the test day. Mine did that.

Do we have a size restriction of whiteboard used for note-taking in TOEFL Home Edition? I have a whiteboard 17*23 inch, and I am not sure if it is too big to be accepted. I want to use it because I need to take note a lot during test. And writing on whiteboard needs more space than it does on normal paper.

I took the home edition examen the last sunday and... i think it was ok. I didnt have problems with connection, the proctor really helped me with the process before the examen, i didnt experience any technical issue, so now i am waiting my official scores. For reference i am from Peru

@@adelebigay9719 yes, with the mirror i showed my keyboard. Then, the proctor told me to do the 360 degree check. I took the examen with my laptop so i had to carried it and moved it, showing my room, my desk and below it. But i recommend you, when you reach the part of the check in, asked the proctor if you can use the mirror just to be sure. Good luck!

I enjoyed taking TOEFL home edition, Proctur U helped me out with the technical installation and everything. I was very anxious in the beginning, but I settled down and I think it went well, not sure about my scores yet but it was definitely a good experience, next time I'll read more quickly than go straight to the questions.

Ive tried to take the test three times already, the platform just keeps saying that my mic is not working just before beginning the 2nd part. The website equip test says everything is ok, the precheck on ETS browser says everything is ok, but it just dont work. And NO ONE can resolve the issue, ive just burned $200.

Had issue with that with ProctorU. After that I argued with ETS regarding allowing to use multiple sheets. Long story short: it’s up to an individual proctor to decide.

If you ever do get disconnected, asap get connected with your Proctor and explain your problem to them. You will be able to resume your test afterwards.

It's a really pity TOEFL Home Edition could not be a solution for two students of mine last week. One student sat for the exam on Wed 27th Nov and the other student sat for the exam on Sat 30th Nov. None of them were able to even get their computers ready. They had everything checked but they had no chance to sit for the exam. YOU need to know you have to have Chrome in your computer otherwise it won't work. Even if you share screen, the proctor would say that screen "was not sharing". They would direct to talk to someone in ETS to get things going. No technical support rightaway. So far, students have spent more than 400 dollars on subscriptions of tests they couldn't sit for.

I had terrible experience. I was online 25 min in advance and the check in process was a nightmare. In one screen I was presented with a message to wait the Proctor and no Proctor was there on time. Although I was logged in and clicked the link on my ETS account, the system did not let me check in. An error message saying that I had multiple sessions did not let me open the browser. I took TOEIC test 4 years ago. Therefore, it was not the first time I did a test from home. ZERO live support. Phone does not answer, and the chat bot is more helpful than the human advisor providing support on ETS website. I never thought I would book an English exam and end up having an anxiety episode. They asked me to send an email, and I will need to wait 10 days for a response for something they could have resolved live. Horrible experience.

No, pls do not take home edition test for toefl. It will take way much more time than you expect. Beleive me. There are always technique issue come s up somehow and you will stuck n your desk at least 3,4 hours to make them fix it. And after 4 hours you will be tired, exhausted, and frustrated, so you can not concentrate your test. And once you start your test, then do not hope there will be someone will help you during the time. No one help you, and somtimes they will just end your test session for no reason and without notice. So you will lose your money. 225$ is a lot of money. Do not beleive, there are plenty of people put comment that theu got good score. Do not beleive that. They all proctor U`s ads to attract people to get home edition test which is bring money to the procter U. Just take your test at the test center. It will be save your time and nervous.

I COULDN'T TAKE THE TOEFL HOME EDITION even though I checked all the requirements. ON THE TEST DAY, my microphone was working perfectly until they launched the ETS test page. I spent MORE THAN THREE HOURS trying to talk to someone. In the end, they said I would need to find another computer - which I did not have at that moment - and to send an email to ETS. It has been A WEEK now, and they promise to reply in two business days... I NEED to RESCHEDULE my test or have my MONEY BACK! PLEASE REPLY! From my experience, there is no guarantee you will be able to take the test even though your PC meets all the requirements!!!

Hi Keomany. At the end of the test you can see your unofficial scores for Reading and Listening. These are scaled scores (0-30) based on the automated scoring. They are not official until they have gone through all of the scoring quality checks at ETS and are sent to your TOEFL account.

How does a question take transition? I mean how it transfers from one question to another question, do I have to submit the answer or it will go to the next question automatically as soon as the time over?

During the Reading section you can go back to every answer and change it before the time runs out During the listening section you have to click on "next" and then click on "ok" to confirm your answer because you cannot go back and change your answer During the speaking section you immediatly Transition to the next question when your time to answer has run out(so you do not have to submit anything in the speaking part)

I have a question for anyone that has already paid for the test. How realistic is it to do the test within 4-5 days after paying? I have my results from another test back on the 6th of August, but I am not sure if I succeeded. So if not, can I register and pay immediately and do a test on 11 august? Hey, I payd for the test in the end of June and scheduled it for the beginning of August, however there were a lot of dates available much earlier (I planned a lot of time for studying). So I would assume that it is quite realistic to schedule a date for the next 5 days or so. The biggest issue I see, however, is that the code by ProctorU (they monitor the test) took 5 days to be sent by mail (at least in my case). You need this code to schedule the test date. Same problem. My system has passed all sound/video checks by ProctorU, but the ETS "Secure Browser" was not able to use the microphone.

BIG DOUBT! Regarding the whiteboard, can I use a big whiteboard as a table in which I can write down everything? The computer would be on top of it but it will be also where I write down everything I need. Thank you very much in advance!

Hi Géraldine. Scores from the TOEFL iBT Home Edition are posted in your account 6-10 days after your test.

Someone please let me know if the predicted scores I see after the test was out of 30 or 40 in the reading section since I had 4 paras so I had 40 questions

Hi! Do you know if the score reports are exactly the same as in the normal iBT TOEFL? I want to know if it says "special home edition" somewhere in the report, because if it does it will not be accepted by some institutions (e.g. the Australian Government for visa purposes). ETS has a terrible service. The home edition test went well but I am waiting more than 4 weeks for my results now. None of my mails asking for the results have been responded and I need the results very urgent for my study application!!
