Q&A: Why is Surah Al-Fatihah #1 in Order in the Quran? | Dr. Shabir Ally

Surah Fatihah is #5 in the order of revelation. Why is it #1 in order of chapters in the Quran? Dr. Shabir Ally says that though the Quran's order was not delineated in a clear way by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to his companions, it came to be compiled in a miraculous way by divine providence.

With due respect to Dr. Shabir; Quran itself mentioned in Surah Qiyamah from verse 16-19 where Allah directly addressed the prophet Muhammad peace be upon him; that final order the way it is now including qiraat is from Allah. And definitely companions very close to him were made aware of it. The companions who had the different order of the surahs probably were not in the vicinity, distance wise and had some different order. But this Surah Qiyamah clearly says that final order of the Surahs conveyed to the prophet was there at the time of the prophet by Allah

There are traditions which state that Gabriel informed the Prophet about the order of the verses and Surahs as and when revealed....and then it was reshuffled for the last time when revelations completed

Ring structure? That is a nice way of saying that the Quran goes around and around in circles. Surah al Baqarah was the first to be written, but al Fatihah was added later because somebody along the way didn't want to start off with "The Cow".

The numerical coding of the Quran was documented by an Egyptian a couple of decades ago and the conclusion was, that to achieve this specific coding the Arabic language would have had to be invented around the Quran.. and we know that didn't happen - the language preceded the text, thereby proving divinity.

That is not so crazy an idea. The written Arabic alphabet was not yet fully invented at the time of Quran composition. Many of the letters had to be added in afterwards as diacritical marks, hence the 10+ qiraat, alternative Arabic versions of the Quran. Do the mathematical miracles occur for all qiraat?

The invention of the printing press and translation of the Bible into the vernacular led to the Protestant Reformation and the free thinking modern age. Islam has resisted this for centuries but will find it increasingly difficult with the advent of the internet.

As a human being and a Muslim, you have every right to say, “My god (Allah) is not a ‘three-in-one’”. We (non-Muslims) will respect you for sayings; and perhaps, we will buy you a cup of coffee. You are a “three-in-one” - a trinity. * Therefore; don’t make us to revoke your voting card, prohibit you from driving, and cancel your clean water access.

The real puzzle here is surah 96, with nothing about Gabriel, Muhammad, squeezing, illiteracy, or a cave. Surah 96 was not the first surah composed, and the story of Muhammad's first revelation was made up by the Abbasid caliphate centuries later and foisted upon surah 96.
