In this interview with SCMA’s Jane Chace Carroll Curator of Asian Art Yao Wu, artist FX Harsono discusses his 2019 video "NAMA," which addresses anti-Chinese discrimination in Indonesia through a performance of young choir singers chanting a 1966 law forcing citizens of Chinese descent to change their names. He answers questions about naming, name-changing, the history and future of Chinese Indonesians, language and attire, and the broad resonance of his art around the globe.
