I think Simon Pegg nailed the difference between British and American humor in his book. American humor always comes with an implied disclaimer, a "just kidding!" at the end to make sure that everyone knows it's a joke. British humor doesn't have that; hence some people assume British humor is mean. He makes an interesting connection of the respective cultures' humor, with British culture being much more cynical after having gone through the fall of their empire, and American culture remaining more optimistic.

I think being more aggressive in the way we speak is more of a European thing. Americans (depending on the state) are just generally taught to be far more polite and well-mannered. My mom is Spanish and her side of the family is constantly arguing and yelling at each other whereas my dad is American and his family wouldn't dream of doing that. I think those culture differences are so interesting!

We Dutch are also quite aggressive. Sarcasm is pretty much how we communicate with each other. so when I chat with Americans online, I need to tone down my sarcasm. this is also a reason we Dutch cant really get along with most Americans, because you get offended by the most tamest things (at least from our perspective).

It's a fact of being brought up a certain way in many of the states, with manners and either keeping your opinion to yourself or being raised in a way that being polite, whether it's wrong or right, is more important. Not always about being stuck up.

I'm Danish with some distant relatives in the US, and i found out that one of the major differences is not just the aggresivness of the way we talk in europe but also bodylanguage, the bodylanguage in most european countries when you're just talking normally or telling a joke is the same as aggressive bodylanguage in the US.
