I like the Q&A video. Tried to bookmark the Wiki, but come up with an error. Is it still available?

Faith, Unfortunately, our Wiki was retired in the last few weeks. The information contained in the Wiki can now be found within our support center at support.ancestry.com. For some of the more specific research interests, we'd also recommend visiting Cyndi's List which contains a fantastic list of resources. www.cyndislist.com/ Good luck in your search!

This was very helpful. Do you have anything on aid/hints on dealing with Mac and Mc, it seems different generations used them interchangeably. I am struggling with a macneil in my Mcneil line. No one is alive that knows anything, I have reached out to distant relatives however it seems no one dealt with that side of the family I can’t even get names or locations. I am getting my dad the dna test. Will this help in following the line? I also can’t find anything before the Dutch war for the family side Vallentgoed, where should I look for information in the Netherlands?

Hi Dee. It sounds like you are doing all of the right things. Getting your dad (and any relatives in that older generation) tested, is always a good idea since you only inherited half of his DNA. When it comes to spelling, keep in mind that many people did not read/write and there was no need for standardized spelling of their names until fairly recently in history (here in the U.S. it was when Social Security was implemented in the 1930s). So, it is really common to find people with a variety of spellings. Don't get too hung up on it. Look for them with all the variants. The Netherlands has great records and some great archives. Try doing some internet searches for Netherlands Archives and you will find a lot of those resources. You might want to start with this: www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/The_Netherlands_Genealogy

How do I purchase forms to enter my genealogy information?

Ancestry has a lot of blank forms that you can print out and use if you want to record your family history by hand. Or, you can build a family tree for free on Ancestry. www.ancestry.com/cs/charts-and-forms

Question about the cousin matches.. If you and a 5th cousin match up together with cousins that are 3rd and 4th cousins.. But then you go to the 4th/3rd cousin profiles and you don't "reverse" match back to the 5th cousin.. What does that mean..? What is proof that the 5th cousin is a real match?
@AncestryUS
@AncestryUS 6 жыл бұрын
The AncestryDNA Shared Matches feature only shows matches up through 4th cousins. So, a 5th cousin match will never show up on that tab.
@frankhooper7871
@frankhooper7871 6 жыл бұрын
The 'proof' is that the match is there. I'm sure I've seen Christa say in other KZbin videos that if you share DNA, then you are related...although you may not now (or ever) know what that relationship is.

do you have video to help with genealogy in France or Belgium?
@stingrayofcincinnati

French DNA would not show up as French DNA. It shows up as Western Europe which would include Germany. With all the wars in the past 500 years between each other. Hard to tell them apart...no offense.

I have not done a video on French genealogy (not my area of expertise). But, here is a great article to get you started: www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/France_Genealogy

Can you elaborate more on "Genetic Communities" please?.. (in the sense of; why you have a paticular group, yet other ethnicities that are almost same percentages you DONT have that community. Aswell as the science of retaining a specific Genetic Communities and not others in your DNA make-up). Also could we potentially get another genetic community in the future?

One day my son told me he'd had his DNA tested and that he was "not that related" to me. I objected, because he gets half his DNA from his father and half from me. I have never been tested. Do you know what he is talking about? He had his test about 10 years ago. Would my DNA have shown up on that? Confused.

Mar Jay How old is your son? Without your dna he does not know this.
@AncestryUS

If he took a DNA test 10 years ago, that was not the AncestryDNA test. We have only been offering AncestryDNA for about 6 years.

Obviously with what Ancestry said, that it can not be with Ancestry, he must be using another site. If that is true, then, another woman showed up as Mother on the list of matches. Mind you, I'm guessing. Need to talk to your son about this.

I was lucky enough to have a book available for my Linkous family. In the book, the author uses a number system. My number is #11511321. I have placed other's numbers in the Note section but I am not noticing they have a number. Fact and Events have no number system. Is there a way to add the number system that will not mess up with any searches I want to do? Thank you.

You can add it as a note or a comment. When you do that an icon will appear in the header notifying you that that information is there.
