excellent thoughts on using the colour clearance as one of the best simple practice routines. Another advantage of course is that those shots are all ones that you KNOW you are definitely going to be attempting during every game.

Hi Steve, great content as always! I have a question. I often find that when I’m playing shots with topspin and plenty of power the cue ball bounces on contact with the object ball, killing a lot of the spin and resulting in me not getting the action I want on the cue ball. Is there something I’m doing particularly wrong that’s causing the bounce? Thanks in advance!
@BartonSnooker3 жыл бұрын
Try lowering the butt end of the cue as well as aiming at the top of the white. If the butt end of the cue is too high, you'll be hitting down on the cue ball slightly and making it bounce.

Some great advice, thanks Steve! In regards to Gary's question about having good days/ bad days, it might sound daft but I always find I play better when I turn up and I'm well prepared physically/mentally for example If I've slept well the night before and had a meal so energy levels are up, and not so well if maybe I've had a few beers the night before and feeling drained.

@wakofish4 жыл бұрын
There are no techniques to potting angles from what I’ve read, you just have to keep playing and work it out for yourself. I noticed that I was hitting most balls too thick so I make an adjustment to hit them thinner which didn’t look right to begin with but then I eventually got used to that angle

Never give up is the best advice. I needed a snooker and all the colours in a frame my opponent went in off a potted yellow 4 points i needed i then cleared the colours to take the win. But more importantly it demoralised my opponent which in its own way helped me win the match from there.

Been doing the line up for about a week - I have a modified pool table at home, I play with snooker balls. 7 reds, 5 blacks and 2 blues. Took me about a hundred attempts! 😁 Really looking forward to having a go at the club whenever that reopens. I've definitely benefitted from your advice. Would be good to see the YT snooker coaches go up against each other.... 🤔

If you miss a red and hit the yellow and then hit another higher value colour I.E blue, pink or black is the foul 4 for the first ball hit (yellow) or the higher subsequently hit ball?

First foul. Unless you knock a higher value ball into a pocket or off the table.

If the shoulder is dropped occasionally, e.g for a power shot as Steve does, would it be a good idea to ALWAYS drop the elbow on EVERY SHOT so that we are used to it and it becomes part of our usual stroke, instead of having 2 distinct strokes? I'm a bit puzzled about this after watching various champs from Joe Davis in the past to Ronnie in the present who drop their elbows on a regular basis. Thanks for any help.
@BartonSnooker4 жыл бұрын
Hello! There isn't really two different strokes. The way I think of it it my cue moves to 3 different points. A) the end of the backswing B) to the chest C) past the chest with elbow drop So if you think of it like that... ALL SHOTS have point A to B. Every single shot you play you'll make that movement. Then just on some higher power shots, you'll go A to B, which is what you repeat on every single shot (and now by this point the cue ball has already been struck)... But then you'll continue to point C so that you keep the tension and smoothness in the cue action. Hope that helps. All shots have the same action by the time the cue ball is struck.... A to B. Just occasionally I go to C as the cue is moving so fast.
@cueball58583 жыл бұрын
@@BartonSnooker Thanks for taking the time to sort that out Steve.
@christiano80883 жыл бұрын
Dude forget about factoring in an elbow drop, it will happen naturally (if at all) on occasional shots. Its like the wrist action during a stroke, some players have almost none like Dave Harold so will always struggle with deep screw shots or arcing the white. Let it happen naturally but if it doesn't happen work with what you have in your armoury.

Keep the new tip compressed for 24 hours in a vice or C-clamp. This helps with consistency of tips.

You can actually buy a hand operated press for tips. Lookup eBay. I have now moved to layered tips. They are a bit more expensive but they come in preset hardness levels and are generally very consistent.

So difficult, in the 90s blue diamonds were very consistent. Blue diamond plus are good. Sometimes you can go through 4 or 5 before finding a grippy not too hard one. Good luck.

Hi, I am on the colours and all reds gone, blue is the next ball and hanging over pocket, unfortunately it’s snookerd by the pink but I have a free ball as my opponent fouled, can I pot the pink onto the blue and pot it as my pink is the free ball and my extra blue. Unfortunately, the cue ball did not hit the ball. So, how many points will be awarded to his opponent? Either 4 or 6? Hope I can get the response from you Sir. Thank you.

"Consistency comes from being consistent". I'm betting you won't get a lot of argument on that. :-) One of my friends was talking to Allison FIsher one time and he said she was really harping on preshot routine...said it did as much for her as anything else, she's a believer...and she has a gorgeous stroke, MHO.

I nearly made it my quote of the year! 😂 Although in all seriousness, being consistent in everything we do (lining up the shot, waking in, the same stance, staying still etc.) all of those things are what lead to consistency! Ha! Be consistent in what you practice, and you will be more consistent 😁
