El Glaoui transformed part of the palace (the fortified village) into a magnificent kasbah. He lived there with his family until 1956. Since then, Ouarzazate bought the Kasbah and partially renovated it.
The initial concept of Kasbah Taourirt has been completely rewritten in light of new information. Only a few parts still bear witness to the splendor of this building, especially the urban-style reception hall, the courtyard, and the facade decorations. The towers, stables, ovens, winding corridors and family rooms no longer have any remains except in the memory of the ancients.
Part of the Center for the Conservation and Rehabilitation of the Atlantic and Sub-Atlantic Architectural Heritage is located in the southeastern part of Kasbah Taourirt. There are also three other parts. The northeastern part was rebuilt in 1996 and is now open to visitors. The “Stara” part is where people live, and the central part is destroyed.
