This drama is based on a novel of the same name, telling the story of Shunzhi Emperor in the early Qing Dynasty. He ascended the throne at childhood and died at the age of 24. His life was full of drama, surrounded by many legends about his death. However, these TV series do not reflect real history. The focus of the story lies mainly in his harem, depicting how people in a repressive court environment become twisted and crazy in their struggles for power and interests. But compared to works on the same subject, it offers a more profound portrayal of the complex emotional needs within human nature. The protagonist, despite being an emperor, is sensitive and fragile by nature, unable to become a competent feudal ruler, and ultimately chooses to commit suicide. Overall, this story is highly tragic. As a Chinese, I'd say that it has great artistic value and is worth watching, but its datedness and low commercial appeal make it unlikely to have subtitles in languages other than Chinese.
