Wow, that was one of the best mogul skiing tutorials with demonstration that I’ve seen.

Every mogul tutorial talks about absorbing but you clearly said to extend too. This is great advice. It's impossible to keep absorbing unless you extend! Bravo.

extend and contract...pop the knees and reach to stay in contact with the snow. more importantly pole plant on the mogul.

I don't think anyone I've seen in similar videos, pointed out this simple and intuitive tip; extend legs when in the bowl of the mogul and shorten when crossing over it. And without trying it, this feels so natural. I'll have to revisit other videos I watched on mogul skiing, and I watched a lot, to see if anyone has approached it like this. This is one of the few skills on the skis that I don't have and the only time I feel awkward and very much like a beginner. Can't wait for the ski season to try this.

Yes, excellent tips. Simple but bang on. I didn't know about the pole plant past the top of bump. Great tip. The tip, maybe not mentioned, that helped me greatly in the past was, once you extend your legs in the crevasse, you then absorb by pulling legs up but also pull your feet back a bit so as to maintain a balanced centre of mass or upper body. Essentially, creating a backwards pedaling motion. This deals with forward motion forces into the bump and helps avoid being constantly driven into the back seat. See some of the best mogul experts like Jean Luc Brassard.

A good introduction to mogul skiing. However I would recommend even shorter poles. I also recommend people to hold their poles in front of them like they are driving a racing car. The fast and exact pole technique cannot be underestimated.

I have struggled with the solving the mogul equation for years. This lesson's simple starting sequence of where and when to extend and then absorb connected the dots.

Hi Kili, thanks for the tipps. Can you give also some hints regarding weight distribution?.....is it equally distributed on both legs or is it alternating between mountain and valley ski. ...And it is true it is hard to find them ..most of the slopes are groomed nowadays. My favorite ski resort told me...this is what the customer wants.... :-)....I personally would love to be challenged by mogules and I need and want to practice them regularly in my drills.........every ski days is a training day for me.... :-).... All the best and stay healthy Tom

Hi Kili, great Video! Can you elaborate a little bit more on the movement in your feet for the turn? How to quickly go forward and how to quickly turn you ski in the moguls?

Great bump tutorial... I recommend much shorter poles... Try at 92 cm...(36 in)..... If you observe your hand position without using poles..well thats where you want pole placement as well.... The large sticks force your hands outward and slightly back..creating unnecessary upper body movement Anyway....nice speedy bumpage

Typical let all hang out description of how to ski bumps. A genuine description would be like how intricate dance steps are taught. You sort of got it with the plant the pole on forward side of the bump. Example(not literal): reach right pole here, step onto outside left ski, step inside right ski, reach over mogul with left pole, compress over mogul, extend as you pass over...That IMO is how describing bump skiing should be done, not the adhoc way done here as is typical. On each turn, besides compressing and extending, the skier goes through choreography of stepping from one side to the other of each ski and planting a corresponding pole in the appropriate place. That's how ski instruction would be better served. Another Example(not necessarily literally) as you're transitioning from left to right turn: Step over onto the outside of the left ski, plant the left pole over the forward side next bump, step over onto outside of right ski, edge left ski, compress over bump, repeat as before with right side now. This is example of a more precision type of ski instruction.

Moguls/bumps are much more common in the U.S. where many runs are not groomed at all. Seems less common in Europe.

You don't have to build them. Just select a nice line and ski it a couple of times (best with a few friends). The more times you follow the same line, the higher the bumps are getting. On days with soft snow (higher temperatures) and a lot of people on the slopes, the bumps appear automatically.

As I just completed yesterday a sad attempt (along with a number of others who were also just as slow), on a black ungroomed mogul run, I can say the moguls were way deeper than this video, and not in the slightest regularly spaced. The moguls in this video are cute.

@@kiliweibel I said sad attempt. Though I'll take congrats that I did eventually get down the very steep slope. I'm out looking for video tips where the moguls aren't laid out nice and neat. I don't usually seek out moguls (I'm in Colorado), but haven't noticed any runs where someone intentionally designed the mogul field for regular left-right-left-right racing, which looks fun. Maybe it's just naturally harder to figure out here. (I went up the chair by this particular run 15-20 times and saw maybe 2 skiers have any flow whatsoever (impressive!), and dozens like me doing 1 or 2 moguls at a time with a healthy pause, or time to regret, in-between. So there must be something we're all missing.)

You know what really stabilizes the upper body? Not throwing your arms around and jamming a stick in the ground while in motion. Lose the poles!

Nice video , you are a very good skier. But …… please improve your english ,because at the end of the video you try to explain the difference between normal skiing and mogul skiing….and thats it : mogul skiing is the best of the best , the end of the sacala ,not everyone can do it it is ( in german „ the king discipline“)
