Great reaction, I appreciate the time you take to talk about your thoughts! This is a top-tier Maiko song, IMO. They also did "ansan" which is a version of "Anemone" (a great ballad from the "World Domination" album; the live acoustic version of the original, non-Maiko "Anemone" can be found on bilibili features guitarist Kanami singing backup vocals and is astonishingly beautiful); "Tora and Tora" (a version of "One and Only"); YOLOSIOUSU (a version of "YOLO"); "Akasimahen" (a version of "Awkward"); and "Screaming" (a version of......."Screaming").

Thank you so much for the support, I definitely need to give some of their acoustics a listen through

It's a bit more of a shrill, upper head register voice she uses during the second part of the verses. I think it goes more with the Kyoto dialect Saiki uses to make it more authentic. This whole concept and execution is pretty spectacular.

I figured it was her doing it and not a post production thing. Definitely makes it sound more traditional!

They had a whole EP the second April Fools. I don't think any of the other Maiko songs had official videos.

It's just beautiful. Some suggestions for more Band-Maid: "Bubble", "Wonderland", "Endless Story"

I think why Gion-cho sounds 'rounder' is simply because they had all the freedom when composing. With SML they had a template they wanted to stick to halfway, which of course takes away some freedom of movement in this respect. That's why I also think that Gion-cho is the better of the two songs, although I still absolutely love listening to SML. I also wish we'd get to hear something from these Maikos again sometime. Like you said, it's a unique concept, which sounds absolutely great. :) 【 'Our rock never dies, ever. Forever!' - Band-Maid 】

Good point. But it would also be interesting to hear them do the reverse and electrify a traditional Japanese song, or maybe a classic enka tune. KANAMI IF YOU'RE READING THIS....

Gion-cho (or the 'Town of Gion') is the old entertainment district in the city of Kyoto, the old capital of Japan and traditional home to the Geisha. A Maiko is a Geisha in training. This song is sung in the local dialect common in Kyoto and while an expansion on their "April Fools" theme from the previous year with 'Secrete My Lips" this song (and video) along with the other songs in the limited EP release, were some very Very well crafted offerings from the Band at that time. The combination of word choice and phrasing showed respect for traditional culture alongside the various puns (both vocally and visually) created something really Amazing....a Fantastic Song!!! (The Tea Ceremony where they all pick up their Chawan for a sip, and Akane starts eating noodles from hers!!!!! L o L ! ! !) Thanks for the reaction and as always.... Po!

For this "Gion-cho" video, it would be interesting if you could give examples of the verbal and visual puns you mention. Also, as you say, Band-Maiko shows respect for traditional culture, and can I point out (as someone who's been in Gion teahouses) that in Kyoto traditionally the word "geisha" is not used - the proper term in Kyoto is "geiko".

This was when Kanami first started to move her arrangements toward showcasing more of the bass, drums, and vocals. I think in this case she wanted to lay back and enjoy the fruits of where her guidance had brought the band ... besides if you want to listen to lead guitar you just have to concentrate on what she's doing in the background ... if you can break your attention away from the awesome vocals, bass & drums on this track!

One thing I love with BAND-MAID is how tight all the parts sound and work together. None of that is lost with this side project of theirs!

It's a Tea House. And a Mako is a shark. a Maiko is an apprentice Geisha. Just remember 'Secret Maiko Lips' is a play on words or 'Secret My Lips', so Maiko is pronounce (My Co), and not pronounced Mako. Sorry, but unfortunately no. Since the outbreak of the Kung Flu there have been no further BAND-MAIKO videos the last two April Fool's Days.

Just an fyi, you pronounce Maiko like (My-co) - or just think Mike, not Make. Agree, this is a very cool alter-ego for them, although honestly I'd be surprised if anything they did was lacking. And Maiko is an apprentice geisha, so like a geisha in training.

You may know this already, but there are several YT channels that do walking tours ( I think mainly for people exercising on treadmills), and a lot of them are in Japan. I watch them while doing snare drum exercises and find them really cool; the built environment is really different from a lot of Western cities. This channel is a good one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3W0aXpqatagj6s
