They were wearing a full face and mask combo. It is believed that one of them panicked and did not feel safe enough to just take the mask off and swim openly in the ocean and the other one tried to save their partner. In my opinion, these mask/snorkel combos are super dangerous. As someone who lives here in the islands, I have seen many visitors wearing them that have panicked right in front of me. I tell them to take it all the way off of their face because they will float and then reposition it. I would advise that if you are going to snorkel, use a regular mask and snorkel. You can pop the snorkel in and out of your mouth as needed and the Mask stays on your face and keeps water out of your nose and eyes. When people are not used to wearing a mask and snorkel, they tend to panic because something is over their face. Those masks are just too hard to remove quickly and are claustrophobic. Once your brain start to panic, it doesn't matter if the threat is real or not it takes you a minute to calm down. Duke University researchers have found that many full-face snorkeling masks do not work as advertised and in some cases may increase the risk to snorkelers. I tell everyone that is coming to visit us to buy a regular mask and snorkel or borrow one of ours until they get more comfortable with what they're doing.

I tried a simple snorkel and mask a couple weeks ago just goofing off in the ocean with my cousin and it's so true. I couldn't wear it long and kept finding myself taking out the mouthpiece as it was very claustrophobic and kept making me feel panicked. I can't imagine how these others would make one feel!! My little fish of a cousin made it look so easy, swimming out there with her snorkel for hours. I didn't realize how freaky they can be until you are very comfortable with them!

I went through a similar experience, only with totally different outcome. My husband panicked while we were snorkling in deep water. I was able to calm him down and take him back to shore because of my training in lifesaving. I will be forever grateful that my dad taught me lifesaving skills. Was snorkeling with my wife in Kauai. She began to panic as the waters were not calm. She is not a strong swimmer and she began to grab for me. I’m not sure if a rip current was involved but many years ago, I had to save my dad who started struggling/panicking as he was caught in a rip current in Maui. I was a competitive swimmer through college and was completely exhausted after helping him back to shore. Lesson learned…swim horizontal to the beach to get out of the current. And don’t underestimate what can happen when panic sets in. It’s a very real thing.

Very sad story. I panicked once while snorkeling but was able to make it to shore. Since then, I have never snorkeled without a life jacket around my waist. People say I don't need it, that the ocean water makes you more buoyant, but it makes me feel more safe, comfortable, and even maybe able to help someone else if they panic. I would highly recommend it. Don't worry about what other people think - safety first. So sorry for their loss.

Tragic. Sorry to hear this. Praying for those left behind to recover & find peace through their faith. Certified SCUBA diver here. There is false sense of security that somehow comes from folks using snorkeling equipment thinking it's safer & no need to have either a swim buddy or snorkel near others who are also snorkeling in the ocean. Always stay near others. RIP tide? Maybe. But remember a person who is drowning will "latch on" to anyone nearby with incredible force. Therefore the "rescuer" is unsuspecting of this death-grip of a panicking, drowning person and then they both drown. One must view the drowning person, and then go deeper underneath and from BEHIND that person and grasp them under the arms from behind and swim a sidestroke and never let that person TURN toward you as they will grasp you & you both may drown. If you must approach them from the front, then, at the last minute, dive under the water and come up behind them. This step is vital because someone who is struggling in the water will attempt to climb up on top of you to try to get out of the water. In doing so, they will likely drown you. Take a YMCA or swimmer's course on how to rescue someone in open water. Gotta have your wits about you - to think and react quickly when something dangerous or difficult happens unexpectedly - IF you're diving or snorkeling anywhere. Period.

We rounded Black Rock & were now in 30’ open water with currents. We turned & sped toward shore. In the distance there was a red flag. No one in water. We never saw the wave,as it lifted us up tore everything off of us & tumbled us. Beach goers rescued us screaming 10-15 foot waves. You almost drowned. Didn’t you see the flag? Never been , and now that i see this , I don't wanna go. It was enough to swim in surf beach waters in Costa Rica for the 1st time in my life. Didn't know what to expect. Within seconds of lifting my feet off the sand , I was pulled away so far that the palm trees on the beach seemed very small. I couldn't believe how I got so far in no time. Terifiying. Then I felt like in a whirlpool and within seconds I had no more energy to fight. So I gave up and I thought this was it. A wave pushed me, then a second one came and pushed me farther and that's when I could touch the bottom. Incredible feeling. Then I fought harder trying to walk towards the beach and finally made it to the beach almost lifeless. My husband behind me struggling just like me. We both made it. Both great swimmers and live on the Atlantic coast in a beach city. But the Pacific with the surf waves is no joke.

@@grandma460and driving is usually safe, with the exception of accidents, too. I stopped traveling far distances, doing favors for people, driving at night, or even leaving the house alone, when I began to get closer to my due date. I didn’t do ANYTHING that wasn’t necessary or a part of my daily routine until they were months old, at least. I wasn’t going to jeopardize a single thing when it came to my baby OR myself, for the sake of my kids. I have 3 kids so far. Ive never done anything out of the ordinary or to the extreme while expecting them OR when they were here. Ive also not left them for a vacation. Pregnant or not. I also didn’t even have a honeymoon, let alone a “baby moon”. I think it’s quite silly. Especially when you already have a child at home. I think pregnant women should think of their pregnancy as if they’re already holding their newborn. Would you take a newborn snorkeling? Why not? Obvious reasons. Which should have been applied to the situation, even if it’s inside her body. Maybe she wouldn’t have had such a hard time breathing or struggling to stay afloat, had she not been pregnant. Who knows? All I do know is that women should treat themselves carefully when pregnant. Not as a giant risk. Some people are preventative, some aren’t. Im not saying anything in an attempt to minimize the situation or make fun of anyone. It was just preventable. That’s all. I feel horrible for that little boy. I was 34 weeks pregnant when a friend, who was stranded on the highway at night, called me to help her. I refused. My husband was at work, I had toddlers at home and no one else to drive. I said no. I wasn’t going to put myself, my children, my unborn baby, in danger. She got home, she just didn’t want to pay for a taxi and tow. I have absolutely no regrets. My babies are safe. I lost a friend (she was selfish and arrogant, for far too many reasons unsaid), but my family is perfectly fine.

Not sure if you’ve ever been in Hawaii, but the waves there can be pretty rough. My guess is one of them maybe panicked and the other one tried to save them. Just speculation though💔.

@@Want2cJesus it really is, God bless their souls. They always say never turn your back on the ocean. I did it once in Hawaii, and a huge wave hit me in the back and rolled me like a ball all the way to the shore. It was terrifying, but I’ll never forget the lesson it taught me.🤣

This is terribly sad! I’ve heard a lot from Hawaiian locals who swear that full face snorkel masks are dangerous for many reasons and they all know not to use them.

Several years ago we walked into a Kanapali (Maui) resort and saw EMS doing chest compressions on the beach. It was a 12 year old girl who had been snorkeling. IDK if she was revived.

Please people do not panic float on your back and just rest. It is the panicking that kills you. Feel your lungs full of air to expand your chest relax yourself and lay on your back just relax every muscle in your body and lay on your back and breathe until help can get there. This is what infants do naturally and that is why most infants are found in boating accidents floating on their backs alive.

To The FOX 13 Seattle News Director - this story as sad as it is - needs some context. What went wrong? What is the message to others to prevent another tragedy? As other viewers have indicated - the story is presented as a eulogy but falls short on helping others prevent the same outcome. A local dive shop owner could have offered that input

Why is everyone here forgetting the baby girl?!? It was more than "a couple" that drowned! It was a sweet innocent baby girl that also perished.
