I find this very poignant as my wife and son were killed when she (and I) were 21. It devastated me because we were so good together, almost perfect. The union was so strong that it was not possible for me to successfully have other relationships but I still remember, so well, how close and intense our bonds were.

I agree that you'd have to know she would betray you, but then... is it really betrayal if you're fully expecting it to come to pass? If you know, for absolute fact, that she will run off with someone else, is it truly betrayal if you yourself accepted that very thing as one of the terms of the relationship?

The first part of the question basically includes for me that we would be absolutely and unquestionably in love with each other (not only me with them), so my partner wouldn't think of or even be able to betray me after. So that kind of contradicts each other I feel.

But the fact that Lindy-dear is pointing out is that the question is broken due to the 'fulfilling' love not being fulfilling, so the betrayal 'twould be possibly more psychologically-harmful. At least with the death, 'tis guaranteed at least the love was genuine, but could thou live with the fact thy love was faking it the whole time?

I would say a hard "NO" to either questions. (assuming "betrayal" means something really serious like "stabbing me in the stomach" or "selling the Rebellion out just as we're about to deal a fatal blow to the Empire", and not just "not do the dishes when she promised she would") For all Lloyd talks about people bouncing back from things, some people are devastated by their relatives dying tragically. I imagine that my dating life after that point would feel horribly bland, shallow and unstable. Even if my emotional makeup weren't permanently changed, I would probably have a lot of trouble staying and being happy in subsequent, non-perfect relationship.

If it was worded "after 6 months it would end" but you don't know how you might get more trepidation. I've seen the woman I love pass away and it still hurts. In saying that I did my best for another woman a few years later and it ended after I found out she was lying to me about more and more things. I have more positive thoughts and I guess more emotion attached to the lady the passed away.

Next question: First off, I'm on good terms with my family so I'd help them out first. They are a slice of humanity as whole anyways so, why not? Now depending on inheritance taxes and whatnot, if inheriting my things were to actually be a burden then perhaps donating it to some kind of help people/planet cause would be a better route to go. I haven't looked into this at all, if I die tomorrow whatever will happen will happen.

It is a self fulfilling prophecy. You know she is going to betray you, and so you have your doubts and the doubt is what turns her off and causes her to betray you. She really did love you, but your doubts ruined it.
@phatbastard0alkaline

I was wondering, even if you knew she would betray you in 6 months time, maybe she really did love you just like the first part said even in this betrayal scenario. But maybe there was a change at the end that occured because of the choice/question you got, because it made you "aware" or something in advance or more like... you really wasn't aware of it, you've been told that she would betray you. So for you, maybe it wouldn't be the most satisfying love imaginable because you would know that she would betray you, but she didn't at the beginning nor the middle but towards the end of 6 months after maybe noticing you being odd/reserved or the like, so maybe you pushed her into it. Its just a speculation. I had a really short relationship where we both loved eachother but it was certainly a test if anything, a chance i was offered. She asked me: "Do you want to try this? I really do love you" And i said: "Yes, why wouldn't i want to take the chance of being with the one i love." We broke up 3 months later. This is a break up and not a betrayal but when you're hurt it sure can feel like they betrayed you. I would do it again, im still somewhat in pain even today 2 years later. I think she was sort of... already telling herself that it wouldn't last because of reasons that we both knew of. Which, i think, sealed the fate of our relationship as partners. But i do know we loved each other. And i think this... precognition you may say that also came from my side, that i had to be the best i can be for her and for myself, sort of changed the outcome of what could've been and how long it would've or could've last. I feel like i will always love her, but then again love makes you blind. But i still think love is always worth to give a shot because i got experiences and memories i wouldn't trade away.

Maybe love isn't permanent, a fixed thing, just because it's the most satisfying requited love for both you one month doesn't mean it will be six months later. Suppose you were going to have the most satisfying love for six months then you don't know what? Could be betrayal could be death, just plain boredom or more of the same? It's always a game of chance, you'll probably get hurt, do it anyway.

Yea it was the oil I didn't expect, the sombrero is just the kind of thing he would have lying around. I think you didn't take into account all the 60's romcoms where a man leaves his wife and gets lost at sea, or reported as Kia, or just assumed dead, then the widow takes up with another lover. She could absolutely love you with all her heart, but then in 6 months, her first husband is rescued and returns. So the gypsy that told you she would leave you in 6 months is right, you wouldn't want to ruin the first marriage of her and a possible hero husband. You bow out like a gentleman, knowing you had the best sex, she would still love you, and as the saying goes (all the other ladies would want you and all the other guys would want to be you)

Six months? Everyone is going to die. Six months, or sixty years, it's all the same. betrayal is the way to go. The person doesn't die. You might feel bad, but hey people change, If the person you loved was going to die, and you could chose for them to just betray you. Who wouldn't take that deal?
@michaelt.5672

Kiki Lang Problem: That's a matter of free will. You are proposing a choice between allowing your lover to die or to have their character warped to the point of unrecognisability (if that betrayal is what she really wants). Hence the person you knew and loved is, in a sense, dead either way.

Amazing video and the question made me realize why I have one ex that I never felt bad about while I have a plethora of others I would do well without. It is because it was intense relationship that had beggining, seducing and an ending. She chose another dude, and although I am not saying it often, in this one case " ´twas better to love and lost, than to never love at all." I think death would be preferable to betreyal. It is saying something about myself, but I think I would never be able to bring myself to truly love her if I knew she was going to betray me. I would always be watching for the first sign of betreyal. You cannot love without trust and faith they will not hurt you intentionaly.

Yes your arguments for why yes in the part 1 are good and I would have to agree, but you have to consider that then you would be comparing every other experience with women to that one and every other would pale in comparison. In my opinion that is the biggest problem with this question and not that she would die.

I've found it easier to forget someone who was unfaithful. Eventually I can kind of tell myself 'ah well, they didn't care about me anyway, stuff them!' But when someone has died it has hung over my shoulders like a pile of rocks. Much harder to deal with.

I knew Lloyd would answer YES to experience perfect love for a few months. I know I'd prefer never to meet her (or him, who knows). Because: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loss_aversion I'd much rather avoid a crippling pain of unknown consequences on every other aspect of my life than experience 6 months of bliss. Compared to these 6 month, every other relation will lack passion, and I would live them as Ersatz of the blissful gone relation. The partner would feel that she's only filling a gaping hole, and not even filling it well, and this would doom the relation from the start. On the other hand, I've never known bliss, and it seems it didn't compromise my ability to live and enjoy live. I can do without absolute bliss. Actually, I'd rather have the chance to carefully build a partial bliss but long lasting, than gambling my whole life for 6 months of pleasure, possibly compromising my entire ability to ever feel happy again.

Infidelity is the worst betrayal IMO. Not only is it dishonesty, which we all hate, but it calls into question the paternity of the children she's already borne for you (if any). Sexual exclusivity between husband and wife reassures the husband that his wife's children are his own (absent genetic testing, men have no way of knowing whether we've successfully reproduced or not), and thus gives him an emotional and biological investment in the future beyond his own lifetime. Infidelity steals his legacy from him and divorces him from the future.

The trouble I find with the scenario in which your partner would die is the fact that you potentially set yourself up for a life in which every relationship that follows would seem unfulfilling and lackluster. Think about it for a moment, if this 6 month relationship is the MOST SATISFYING (as is stated in the question) then naturally any romance following that would be less satisfying by comparison. You would find yourself comparing every future romance to this one, thus being forever tormented by the fact that you will never have a romantic relationship like the one you had for 6 months. It would also make it nigh impossible to simply move on given the fact that every future romantic relationship will be a reminder of the perfect romance you once had and now can't have.

I see your point, but the same logic would mean that I should never see the best film, or eat the tastiest food, or listen to the best music.

May I begin by saying I am honored to receive a reply from you! and reply by saying that sure we could replace the word 'relationship' in the question with the word 'food' or 'film' or 'music.' My point is that whatever stimuli you choose to replace it with the end result would be the same. If you were only allowed to have this "best experience" for a limited time then when that time is up, you would lament it's absence. If we play by the rules of the question, then this "best experience" is the best there ever was or ever will be in it's respective category. We would break the question and render the exercise pointless if this "best experience" was replaceable with something else. Thank you for reading my ramblings!
