The A380 is indeed an impressive aircraft but no other plane in history has the majesty of the 747 in flight or at take-off into a sunset or anytime.
@anonsmith334612 жыл бұрын
The reverse does help slow the aircraft down somewhat and I'm sure the pilots would prefer to have them as an added bonus, but I think the weight issues combined with the increased FOD risk made the decision to have only 2. I'm sure airlines are not wanting to spend the money on repairing one of those engines as well so I think they are okay with this.

Qantas use A380s on two routes from Australia to Los Angeles. 1: Qantas flight 93 which flies non stop from Melbourne to LA. 2: Qantas flight 11 which flies non stop from Sydney to LA. The Melbourne flight arrives around an hour earlier than the Qantas 11 from Sydney. Hope that helps.

Jumping forward eleven years so much has changed at LAX. The first A380 arriving VH-OQC was the third aircraft delivered and named “Paul McGinness” currently that aircraft has been in Abu Dhabi since June 2021 for maintenance or new interior refurbishment. The second A380 VH-OQH was the eighth aircraft delivered and is in service and is currently (at the time of writing) enroute to Los Angeles. I believe the departure of this aircraft in the video wasn’t to New York as the takeoff roll was too long for a trip to the east coast of the USA with most likely a light load. At that time 93/94 were flown by A380’s. 11/12 were also flown by A380’s. 107/108 were flown by 747-400er’s, and 15/16 Brisbane were also flown by 747-400. 107/108 was later dropped and the New York segment of 11 was made with the 747-400 that came from Brisbane. It would arrive back in Los Angeles in the evening in time for it to continue onward to Brisbane. I flew the LAX-SYD segment of 108 to Sydney in 2009.

Yes, it's bigger in terms of its wingspan and carries a chunk more passengers (853 for A380, 750-760 for 747-8) But the 747-8 is a fair bit longer. So it depends whichever way you look at it.

Qantas a380's are used for Sydney and Melbourne to LAX......QF11 and QF93.....and also Sydney and Melbourne to LHR.....QF1 and QF9. Quite often one is used for Sydney to HKG......QF127. Occasionally one is used in place of a 747 as QF107 SYD/LAX/JFK and most likely the aircraft seen departing here.

I hope Qantas uses the longer runways at LAX for their A380s, I heard Nancy Bird Walton A380 was using the shortest 2.7 km long runways, which the Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines were pushed beyond its design limits to lift the fully loaded 500+ ton A380 off the ground, which stressed the engine, overtime it caused a leak in the oil pipe which the oil ignited exploding the engine, something like that

You re correct in the reasoning of the design however taking that in note the current wings can not take the weight. Whilst the overhang of the span was a concern in coming to this, not having reverse capacity allowed the design to not allow the extra weight for engines 1 and 4. Engines 2 and 3 weigh almost 14000pounds whilst engine 1 and 4 weight just under 12000. (ref to EASA design notes 2004)

QF107/108 DO operate LAX/JFK/LAX, but they do NOT use the Airbus. Having worked for QANTAS (Queensland And Northern Territories Aerial Service) I can tell you that the flight Originates at Melbourne with the A380, lands at LAX. It continues to JFK using an A340 (smaller plane since most don't continue onward) Same plane turns around and comes back... That particular aircraft was ferried to the USA JUST for the LAX/JFK route. It does not fly back across the Pacific on any normal rotation.

I can only imagine how anxious those folks were in getting off that LONG flight from Sydney!!! Back in 1971 my family and I moved to Western Australia. My dad was in the US Navy and we flew from Chicago to LAX then LAX to HON, then HON to Sydney......then Sydney to Adelaide, then Adelaide to Exmouth, WA (West Australia)....I was the OLDEST kid of three, at age 10.......I have NO clue how my parents managed THREE kids on that near 3 day flight there.
@michaelhayden7252 жыл бұрын
Just a small correction: Given that Exmouth is around 1200/1300 km north of Perth its more likely at they flew Adelaide/Perth and then Exmouth (the plane would have landed at Learmonth - probably an MMA Fk27). I spent two years from May '71 to May '73 as a Flight Service Officer in Port Hedland and regularly communicated with aircraft into and out of Learmonth. Cheers

@@michaelhayden725 my dad was an E9 in the US Navy, we were in Exmouth from January 1971 to January 1973. I think you were right, we did fly to Learmonth via Perth most likely. I just remember it was horrible. Seemed like a few days to get there. Dad used to say that it was 14F in Chicago when we left and in excess of 120F in the sun when we got to NW Cape. My little blonde haired sister was sooo sick from the heat. Good memories from our days in W.A.

These are beautiful airplanes! I don't want to sound like a prick, but it is quite possible the uploader is correct on the flights here; A380s flights do go from LAX to NYC and then on to Australia. There are also flights from OHare to LAX to Singapore with these. Yes these are a long distance airplane, but typically the airlines stops at one major airport to pick more people up. I know, because I've flown in one : )

The wings would support the weight of reverse thrust systems on 1 and 4 engines. The decision not to fit reverse thrust to these outer engines is based on the fact that due to the long wingspan these engines on landing are often over grass not tarmac and concern was expressed regarding ingesting the possibility of debris being thrown up into the relevant engines.

QF107 is normally a B747 - the aircraft from Brisbane goes to NYC and back and then flies back to Brisbane in the evening. Daytime A380 takeoff is pretty rare so well done for catching it. I suspect it was the QF108 to Sydney delayed from the previous day when the wing tips were damaged. Not the damaged aircraft - that one flew back to SYD a couple of days later.
@AUmarcus10 жыл бұрын
Nope, this footage was taken a couple of years before the wing tip incident. New Yorkers have seen Qantas a380's at JFK......so they must make the trip on the odd occasion. QF107 is always a flight which originates in Sydney.....most times with a 747 but occasionally with an a380......if a 747, it always continues on to JFK......if an a380, a 747 usually slots in at LAX to complete the trip.....you are probably correct about that being the aircraft from Brisbane.
@ivanblakely90310 жыл бұрын
sorry - got it wrong re the wingtip damage - that was later. In this case it was a a 'technical issue' that delayed QF108 from the previous evening. I can't quite make out the registration on the video, but if it is VH-OQA then it arrived LAX that morning as QF11, and was turned round as delayed QF108 to sydney. Either way, QF107 that day was not an A380 but a 747 (VH-OEI which coincidentally was the aircraft that would clash wingtips.... but later.) Also, while flight 108 goes JFK-LAX-SYD, it is not necessarily the same aircraft. Sometimes it goes to Brisbane & sometimes Sydney.
@AUmarcus10 жыл бұрын
QF108 always goes directly to Sydney from LAX from what i've seen. You aren't confusing it with QF8 DFW/BNE/SYD are you?
