Those vortices were cool to see. I know it's an optical illusion, but it's still quite "trippy" watching the propellers spinning and then look like they are going in reverse, while in the air 😂

Most scary flight for me was back in 1997. Flying from SYD to CBR on an Ansett 737. We were flying through a thunderstorm, and everybody in the cabin was quiet. The short flight seems to take ages. Upon landing in Canberra, the captain had to make a joke to relief the pressure "Ladies and gentlemen, we have landed in London", everyone started laughing.

Thanks Paul. Always good to see a good ole’ de Havilland Canada Dash 8. I used to live just a few kms from the de Havilland Canada plant and it was great to see them test flown. Oh and for the record, as Bombardier is French it is pronounced Bom-Bar-Dee-A. And if you like short take offs/landings, you have to see the Dash 8’s older sister - the de Havilland DHC-5 Buffalo. I have seen them take off and land in just 500 metres! Oh and speaking of designations, the Dash 8 moniker comes from her original designation of DHC-8 (as in de Havilland Canada number or dash 8).

I got a rough flight on an Ansett 737-200 from Sydney to Melbourne. Lightning outside the window and we got thrown all over the place. My seat mate said hold on captain called flight attendants to seats now! 1983! I have been on an Emb110 bandit and SAAB 340B in Rarotonga Cook Islands. Thrilling. Cheers.

Once flew from Jeju South Korea back to Ningbo China. Before boarding, a flight from Jeju to Shanghai had been canceled due to a thunderstorm. My flight took off as usual. More than half of the flight was extremely bumpy, it was like riding a rollercoaster. Cabin service was suspended due to turbulence and flight attendants held their hands firmly to the overhead luggage racks. I could barely see anything out of the window. PA was rare for Chinese airlines, but the captain made one telling passengers he is very experienced and he can manage the situation.

I used to work for the Quantaslink flights that operated for JQ here in NZ. Mainly Our flights was SBI, TQM, TQL, TQD and TQK. Once a maintenance is due they fly one Air craft back to Tamworth Airport via Norfolk Islands and they bring down SBW as a replacement. Since JQ stopped it's regional flights here in NZ last November all the flights went back to Qantas link. Only in Auckland we used the step and the prop tie while pax are disembarking and boarding while the other ports used the Q ramp as shown in the video. Lots of memories with these props. Now I work for the JQ A320s. The Tail Number which starts with S (SBT) means Single Beacon while where T (TQM) starts with is twin beacon

You got it spot on about flying in these twin prop planes. A totally different flying experience than flying on the big jets. The high pitch noise of the propellers and you feel every bit of turbulence and the plane twisting and swaying with every bit of wind movement. Great review! Ah I see now that it was the exact same plane 'Rockhampton' that i flew from Canberra on. I thought you just meant the same model! Snap!

Nice camera work , especially some of the slow motion shots and I like a panning shot from the remote gate bus at the end. The toilets are the worst I've been in as you fold yourself in and out, and then nearly took out the flight attendant who was standing there before the flight. I like the idea of booking the row 1 and 2 seat with friends or family - one could call it the Q (300) Suite

Ah Paul does it again - Port Macquarie International Airport! LOL. A few years ago, for about 15 months I flew SYD/CBR on Monday mornings and back on Friday arvo. Mostly in Dash 8s. On this morning there was turbulence and we did two go-rounds. Before starting the third landing attempt the pilot told us that if we did a third go round, we'd be heading back to Sydney to re-fuel. Pax were happy when we made it down! Whilst the jets take most of the noise away, when younger in a DC3 (?) I loved the bit where on take-off, the plane would be at the end of the runway and then they rev the engines up to 111% and let the brakes off. Yee hah - you knew that you were flying.

Thanks for another interesting video, Paul. My rough flight was Sydney to Belmont one night around 1985 in an Aero Pelican De Havilland Twin Otter through a thunderstorm, especially violent over Broken Bay. I was scared shitless! Put me off small planes for years and I caught a train home the next day. The Twin Otter was a 16 seater that developed into the Dash-6. It had twin P&W turbo props, 2 pilots, no hostess and a fixed undercarriage. Mercifully it wasn't a tail dragger, otherwise I would never have got on.

Hey Paul, I went to the FlyPelican Inaugural flight it was good there wasn't that many people there but it was good to see a different aircraft come into Port. I dont know if you have but you totally should fly on the BAE Jetstream 32, you dont have to choose from Port to Canberra but from anywhere, It is a really interesting aircraft on how it is designed, it looks like the took the Cargo Pod form the Cessna Caravan and the tail from a Citation Jet. I did take a video but I haven't uploaded it. Hope you come back to Port sometime maybe when Alliance comes back with there new contract with Virgin.

Turbulence?? I was on a QANTAS 747 flying Sydney - Honolulu in 1975 and we hit a massive downdraft caused by a thunderstorm. People that weren't strapped in hit the roof. The lights went out for a few seconds. Ceiling panels were hanging down afterwards. Chaos!! There was a baby in the basinett on the bulkhead and I saw it float up into the air before the lights went out. When the lights came back on I looked at the baby - it was back in the basinett and fast asleep! There was an annoucement for doctors as some passengers had been injured. When we finally got to Honolulu the passengers spent ten minutes trying to find their shoes (lots of people remove their shoes on international flights) as they had been flung all over the cabin. My father was a QANTAS 747 first officer at the time and we were on a family holiday. My sister's seatbelt wasn't working (QANTAS!!! how could you), and my father had swapped seats with her and was holding onto the arm rests as he knew the turbulence might be bad - luckily he hung on! My father talked to the pilots on the way out and they said the aircraft dropped 3000 feet in something like ten seconds. Fun fact - TV personality Mike Walsh was on the same flight so he can confirm this story.

The Q-300 turbo-props are a common sight here in New Zealand (Air New Zealand). The last couple I caught were between Christchurch and Palmerston North and they were jam-packed. Which wasn't particularly comfortable but my favorite thing is cutting through the clouds and seeing Lake Ellesmere come into view. I agree with you. There's something very real about this type of plane. Them and the ATR-72 are the bread and butter of the airlines local/national hops between towns and cities.

Paul I think it’s pretty neat seeing a dinky wheel set disappear into the engine housing. You are not alone! Two roughest flights? 1. BA London to Naples- we flew over a volcano and dropped a tasty 3000 feet before hitting the runway. The pilot joyfully advised us “that we had definitely landed.” 2. Alitalia Rome to London. A windy night landing or should i say go around. We barely touched the tarmac when we took off. The door to the cockpit burst open and we could hear the pilots talking loudly and quickly. I can only guess but it probably wasn’t “It’s going to be another half an hour before we get our espresso and ice cream”

I really like your content Paul. And you mentioned turbulence, I have found it to be a little bumpy every time I've landed at Hobart.. I've always figured it's the air coming off the water meeting the land and mountains that cause it but I actually like that feeling

I was on a United 767 out of Heathrow and over Dublin we were going through some really crazy turbulence, and we even dropped some quite abruptly. You’re not alone, I binge watch Dash 8 videos for landing gear footage. BTW love your RM Williams, thinking about getting myself some, despite being an ardent fan of cowboy boots.

Nice video I've flown on Q400's from Mildura to Melbourne & like you I really enjoy flying on this aircraft, a friend of mine has said that she would never go flying In these turboprops but I also find these flights very smooth, The only bumpy experience I had was In summer as Mildura gets well into the 40's so the hot air does cause a bit of a ride. I'm heading to Brisbane In about 6 weeks so I will have the best of both worlds flying In a Q400 & then a Boeing 737.

The great thing about turboprops as you say is because they are smaller and fly lower you have the feeling of moving through air masses more. True, you get turbulence and other effects on jets but for the most they hide the weather. Also they bring back the old days and make you wear your rose tinted flying goggles :) Great report as always, hope that great country of yours down there stays green as long as possible. You had a hard time with fires even before Covid, so the best of British, er, Aussie luck with that.

Last time I was on one of these was a flight to Anchorage Alaska for a doctors appointment and I lived in Kenai, AK at the time. A rather intimidating plane mostly due to the loudness and the prop being so close to the entrance lol. I was maybe 8 at the time and had never been on a plane before.

I love that seat on the dash-8s as well, best seat in the house! :) I've always wondered what the mix of point-to-point vs connecting traffic is on the Port - Sydney flights is. By the time you factor in getting to and from the airport and check in business, if you aren't connecting onwards then time savings of flying must be getting pretty modest, especially as the Pacific Highway upgrades continue.
@PaulStewartAviation

Hey mate, to be honest I doubt very little if any pax would be connecting unless they're an avgeek like me haha.

Since you asked. Earlier this year I was on QF617 on 18FEB BNE-MEL, we flew into a massive storm on approach and hit a severe windshear, the bottom dropped out and the captain went full TOGA at a steep climb gradient, people in the cabin screamed. As an experienced avgeek/ex airline employee I was even shook. I spoke to the captain afterwords and she said it was the worst she had ever flown into. If you have flightradar24 you can try and pull up the history and you can see the graph of the massive change speed and altitude.

I have always loved the sound of a turbo prop. The Dash 8's are a great little plane but for my money nothing ever comes close to the beautiful sound of the Rolls Royce Dart turbo prop on the Fokker F27. I miss the old days in the 70's and 80's getting out of the car at the Ansett car park at Kingsford Smith airport in Sydney and the first thing you hear is the scream of the F27's on the tarmac. Love it. If you tried to start an F27 today you would be hit with thousands of dollars in fines for noise pollution.

Nothing wrong with a turbo prop. Last week I flew on an Air NZ Q300 of a 35 minute flight from Kerikeri (Bay of Islands) to Auckland, traveling at 12,000 ft. Great flight with a friendly flight deck and cabin crew. Being a small regional airport, Kerikeri airport has a new terminal building with good views of the runaway and apron. No self check in but the old fashion check in by 2 ground staff like in the old days when flying was adventure :)
