Thank you so much, reading the diagram's or descriptions of them is useless without seeing an example shown.

For the example you explained, What if there was some percentage of alkali feldspar? what will happen with the third line?

Hey Dane, you didn't recalaculate to 100%, why ?

Do you know why Q and F cannot exist together ? They said due to chemical reasons, but I need more detail, please.
@rayres10746 жыл бұрын
Magmas saturated with silica will crystallize quartz, because only these magmas have so much free silica that at the end of precipitation there is enough free silica for it to crystallize pure. In the other hand only magmas unsaturated with silica will crystallize foids, as they will show up when there's a lack of free silica to complete the structures. So saying that quartz (which implies abundance of free silica) and foids (which imply lack of free silica) is wrong
@rayres10746 жыл бұрын
It's not a chemical matter per se but an environmental matter in terms of chemical availability. Just like you'd ideally eat a nice meal, but you don't have that much food, so you have to accept only having a snack
@snakehead2145 жыл бұрын
If i remember corectly, Q and F react to one of the 2 feldspars. So as long as there is some of both, it will react.When one is completely "gone" into reactions, only the other one will be left in the stone :)

is Plutonic rocks less 90% a mafic composition? and is volcanic rocks M less than 90% also mafic composition?
@athi87583 жыл бұрын
sorry, I figured it out, it depends on the diagrams mineral compostion displayed. e.g. Rhyolite = felsic, gabbro = mafic.

can someone help me with finding the specific gravity?
@rayres10746 жыл бұрын
G = weight of mineral in air / (weight of mineral in air - weight of mineral in water) accordingly do Dana
@rayres10746 жыл бұрын
Alternatively, D = ZxM / NxV where Z is the number of atoms in an unit cell, M is the molecular weight, N is Avogrado's number and V is the volume of an unit cell

The units are volume percent (% vol.). Never liked how geology diagrams so seldom provide units or labels
@daneandersen81814 жыл бұрын
Agreed - and thats an important distinction to be made. I guess since its a visual classification, its assumed it % vol. and not weight
