It's the most terrifying mid-air emergency in Australian aviation history - flight QF72's autopilot tried to kill all 315 people on board. They were only saved by the quick thinking of Captain Kevin Sullivan - so why has Qantas refused to give him and the crew the recognition they deserve? And why were the warning signs from QF72 not heeded by other airlines? Please don’t forget to sign Fuzzy’s petition at www.change.org/p/qantas-forgo...

Thank you all for your supportive comments towards the crew of QF72. It was a science fiction scenario that became a reality; confused computers using automation to harm rather than protect our aircraft, crew and passengers. I see there are many technical questions here and I recommend you read the book I have written on this flight entitled, "No Man's Land". I talk in depth about the flight, what went wrong, what went right, the heroic actions of the passengers and crew, and the investigation into the causes of the accident. I was hoping that our event would be the last accident involving bad automation, but the recent 737 MAX accidents have indicated that we have a long way to go. Sadly, there are many similarities in these tragic aviation events. Thank you for your continued support. Captain Sullivan

Captain Sullivan. You saved 315 passengers that day. Even those who are not able to , I know you would of fought to the very end to do so. You are a courageous man and so are your flight crew. I do wonder sometimes if Planes automation is hackable/remotely ... it's not out of the realms of possibilities, but is this what you were hinting at?

Tell the Qantas board and bloody Alan Joyce that. To them Capt. Sullivan did nothing special. Boycott Qantas until they give Capt Sullivan and the whole crew public aplologies on TV and then give them the special recognition they deserve. If that plane crashed, it would have had SERIOUS repercussions on Qantas reputation, brand and perceived safety record. It probably would have seen the sacking of Alan Joyce as CEO.

A large number CEO's and Execs are narcissistic psychopaths. They do not give a damn about anyone or anything but the bottom line, if something hurts profits in any way, its supressed and brutalized into a pulp. They may be smooth talkers, charmers and they are obviously intelligent but they are mostly inhuman in my books. I do not trust a word that comes out of any "shareholders", Ceos or billionaires mouth anymore This problem is perpetuated by the ruthlessness of modern capitalism

The faulty data came from one of the ADIRU unit from Northrop Grumman. The aircraft can be flown without them and they can be switched of. In this case a software bug let some faulty data slip through to the flight control software. The Airbus goes from Normal Law (with stall protection) to alternate or directly law which lack stall protection and the pilot simply flies them as normal. The faults in the units themselves were detected by other parts of the system and self disconnected, though not without some extremely violent pitch down manoeuvres.

This is what we have to look forward to as autonomous driving develops. There will be unknown levels of problems like the layers of an onion. The most serious ones will cause deaths but be resolved quickly. Each problem layer of the onion will take longer and longer to happen, will result in deaths, and be fixed. As each problem is solved, the technology will get safer and safer, but not before technology kills people. That being said, flawless computer hardware with flawless sensors and flawless software will be much safer than human drivers. But there lies the problem. Airplanes have OBVIOUSLY not yet attained that level of flawlessness. Cars will undergo the same evolution. Its actually worse with cars due to proximity to other cars and structures. Small errors in airplanes will not produce a crash. Small errors in cars will.

One difference is that most car drivers are worse than useless in an out of control car, but a trained and experienced pilot is not, in an out of control plane. So there's way more of a case for always allowing a pilot to take control. Less so for cars. So, you're quite possibly right Jim. However, Tesla cars are already safer, on average, than human controlled cars, and their database of driving experiences for machine learning is expanding exponentially, with way, way more data than for planes, and still allows human override, from which the AI learns.

As a computer programmer, I find it terrifying how much people are placing their trust in computers to do their work for them on aeroplanes. Programming is a highly specialised field where it is VERY difficult to get things right, and where stuff can so, very, very easily go wrong. I think if there's anything that's to be learned from disasters like this, it's to put a button in front of the pilots of the plane that is the 'Give me full control of the f***ing plane' button which disables all automation, not just the autopilot, and lets the humans fly the plane without having to worry about automation overruling them. Pilots need to be able to selectively disable or enable automation as is necessary. Computers should exist to help pilots, NEVER to replace them. I honestly don't know why heads didn't roll over the dumb decision to allow computers to override pilots.

This has been going on since the 1990s. For the love of God I dont know why Computers are allowed to control Planes and since 2018 the autopilot system must be reviewed before more human lives are lost via some strange Accidents. I pray for the capability of all those Pilots that fly our Commercial planes all the time in the 2010s and now we are in 2020.

"No Man's Land" is the story of the QF72 accident. It was released 12 months ago and this documentary shows the people side of this accident. Confused computer systems and automation on an Airbus A330 injured 119 passengers and crew. Over 6.3 million views here...incredible! The survivors of the QF72 appreciate your interest and support, and I hope the warnings I voice in the book and in the documentary are heeded by those in commercial aviation, and elsewhere.
