Why not using the Rasterize tool of CloudCompare to create a geotiff raster from the (ground) point cloud directly?

Thanks for the question! I love CloudCompare's Rasterize tool, but this video is part of a course/playlist on QGIS so I'm keeping as much of the workflow in that program as possible. I use these videos in my classes (and sometimes for workshops). That said, I will be creating additional videos on CloudCompare in the coming weeks.

Why less than 1 million points? Is this a limit in working with QGIS?

Thanks for the comment! This is a limit of the free version of LASTools. You can get around this limit by removing LASTools from the workflow altogether and constructing the DEM in CloudCompare. I have a video on that workflow here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4jSXnarid-fr9k
