Hey, Depending on the type of provider, you can or can not add fields.. However, this is a known issue and there already is a patch to fix it [1,2]. [1] - github.com/qgis/QGIS/pull/7375 [2] - github.com/qgis/QGIS/issues/19012

which units are being used for area calculation?

The area calculated with this function, as it says, respects both the current project elipsoid settings and area unit settings. In this example, we are using EPSG:6316 Projected coordinate system for The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, same datum and projection as MGI 1901 / Balkans zone 7 (CRS code 3909) but differs in axis order and area of use. ... and the Unit is metre. 🙂

It may be that you're working with a line layer...Not all closed ways are automatically polygons. Many greetings 🙂
