I tell you , clay soil is good soil , but you need to do some work to make it work , I had clay soil when i started growing plants , you just need a few things and it will make your clay soil into a good soil , 1) falling leaves , especially in the fall time if your neighbor put all the fall leaves , just ask and use your lawnmower cut it or ground it into small pieces ,grab as much as you can , just leave on ground if you dont have lawnmower, it will decompose and make the soil good 2 ) grass clipping , if you cut grass, dump on your soil and stir around it 2) mulch , buy at least 5-10 bag of mulch to cover the ground you want to plant something , 1 or 2 year will turn into good soil 4 ) compose - your banana pill , your eggshells , but NEVER onion/leak/garlic/chilly spices/orange /lemon, those are not friendly to your soil and no bone/milk/protein ,just leafy garbage , my soil from very clay soil turn into very good soil in 4 year , i tell you clay soil is better then a lot of sandy/ dry soil , so you are lucky to have clay soil
you have to buy triple mix , it will contain top soil ,peat moss and compose , because many top soil are not really fertile , i will suggest you buy a big bag of peat moss before you even spread your grass seed , and if you want to do it in fall time, you have to do it 45-50 day before the frost , usually in Toronto , we have frost around end of October , so do it when all kids back to school , the very late i spread grass seed is around the second week of September .
