The letters are a guaranteed 9, but tyou only get one letter at a time and they're scrambled. for the numbers round the chooser picks a hieroglyph with a predetermined array instead of choosing "four from the top and one from anywhere else" or whatever.

QI annoys me because it is rare that their trick questions are actually upright and straightforward, usually they’re quibbling about definitions such that even knowing all the information I still couldn’t answer the question the way they want me to. I like Only Connect because I feel like it plays fair and, though I don’t get many, I feel like I could get them.

I think it's about play on words, but nothing about erectile dysfunction... Stephen is like 60 ish here and jack is in his 20's.

He was in pretty serious mental torment towards the end of his life, claiming that spirits would play music in his head. Roj H No it is the Eye of Horus. According to Egyptian myth, Horus lost his left eye in a struggle with Seth. The eye was magically restored by Hathor, and this restoration came to symbolize the process of making whole and healing. Osiris was the father. But who cares, they were really evil aliens anyway.

The hieroglyphs are just stand-ins for the questions. At some point, they used greek letters. It just gives the candidates something to call out to "choose" a question. I'm pretty sure that what question is behind which symbol is random.

The show received some criticism for trying to be too fancy for making those the choices, so in response, they changed from greek letters to egyptian hieroglyphs, basically taking a stab at the critics.

I think it's been going for about 7 years. Originally on BBC 4, therefore unwatched except be nerds (me) , now on BBC 2, so it gets some normal people as well now. Hardest quiz on TV, easily beats that new C4 one presented by John Snow (the newsreader, hope I got the right name). Some shows on KZbin, if you watch it prepare to be baffled, amazed and to shout at the screen when you think you know and they don't.
