The mention of fax machines and quantum physics reminds me of all the conversations in the 1980s and 90s where I tried to explain to older people why, after you fax a paper to someone, you still have the paper you sent.

How can that be, I've just sent them _the_ paper?! I remember in the mid-nineties my dad deleted the Internet Explorer icon from the desktop by accident and thought we'd never get it back. My young brain thought he had deleted this..internet. Eight years later I was writing my own HTML for my Myspace and Neopets. 😂

Just like the teleporter, as a kid I used to imagine a scanner/shredder combo, to make the physical-->digital conversion more real. Obviously a terrible idea because I have now dealt with real world printers effing up... And yes this is why I would never accept a trek style teleport .....

My grandmother's best friend was going deaf, just as she reached adulthood. They did that plane-acrobatics trick to her. Didn't work (surprise). In the '60's her sin had the same condition developing. He had an out patient procedure at a doctor's office. Cured, Marvelous times we live in.

The "teleportation" bit makes me think about the application to deep space travel. We could actually communicate w/o waiting hours for a message to bounce back.
@joje86

I wish, but sadly, Sandi is promulgating a common misunderstanding of quantum non-locality. I'm not a physicist but basically, when Sandi writes "ALAN" on her half of the banana, and "ALAN" appears on the half that Cariad is holding, she is putting events in the wrong order. More correct would be for Sandi to write "ALAN" on the banana before splitting it, such that one half said "AL" and the other said "AN". Then randomly, without looking, throwing one of the halves to Cariad. Until either Sandi or Cariad looks at their half, we can imagine that the banana is in a quantum superposition. I.e. Cariad is holding both the half that says "AL" and the half that says "AN", and the same is true for Sandi. Just like Schrödinger's Cat being both alive and dead until you actually open the box and interact with the quantum system inside (through observation). However, as soon as either party, let's say Sandi, looks at her half and sees either "AL" or "AN", she instantly knows what the other half says. I.e. the quantum superposition collapses (or we learn which universe we are in, given the ever more popular Everettian many-worlds interpretation of QM) and however far apart Cariad and Sandi are, one of them definitely has the "AL"-half, and one of them definitely has the "AN"-half. However, there is no way for Cariad to know that the superposition has collapsed unless she herself looks at her banana-half or Sandi uses regular subliminal communication to tell her. When Cariad does observe her half, she would know that the superposition had collapsed, but not whether it had collapsed due to her observation or because Sandi had already looked at her half. Meanwhile, Sandi can't decide which half she will observe and thus cannot decide which half Cariad will see, and vice versa. And since interaction/observation causes the superposition to collapse, neither of them can check whether the superposition has collapsed without causing that collapse at the same time. Essentially, observing the banana will always yield the same result to the observer regardless of whether it had already been observed or not. So you see, there is no way, as far as our current understanding tells us, to use quantum non-locality for superluminal communication. Though it is a common trope in sci-fi and the machine doing it is usually called an "Ansible."

@@joje86wouldn't we also get "killed" every time we teleport?
@joje86
@joje86 6 ай бұрын
@@avysark2034 That's probably more of a metaphysical question than a physical one. Say that we could disassemble a person in one place and reassemble them in another. Are we using the same parts? Or did we only send information describing the configuration of particles, but using other completely different raw materials? If it's the second, what forces you to terminate the original? If the answer is "nothing", and the copy and the original don't share one consciousness, then yes teleportation is essentially just making a copy and killing the original. But say you can reuse some of the actual components of the original, then you suddenly end up in the Ship of Theseus situation. How many parts have to be kept?

I don't know if Kidney stones are really worse than childbirth, but I had them young and it was misdiagnosed. I lived with them at their worst for over 6 months until I went to a different doctor that wasn't an idiot. There were times when I thought I was going to die, and a few times I considered helping that along. It was absolute hell. Now they have a modified ultrasound that can break them up inside you. They didn't have that then. They knocked me out, went up the pipes, and pulled them out by hand. At least I got an opiate addiction out of it, being the late 90's and all. Then I quite those, and well... Felt like dying. Considered doing it myself. I always love how on A&E dramas that everyone gets, like, sexy cancer. "Sorry ma'am, but you are dying of sexy death. You have only a few months to live, but you can live longer with a high dose prescription of... Muh penis." Real world? "Yeah, son. Stones made your bollocks explode. Tough luck, that. Wanna get high?" 'Murica. Total overshare, but hopefully it gets a chuckle somewhere. :)

19:00 It's sad to see that her description of quantum teleportation was completely wrong on several different directions. As an explanation of entanglement, it relates a wrong impression that seems to have some legs under it. Doing something to yours doesn't cause the same thing to happen to the other like some voodoo doll; rather, it breaks the entanglement.

When I learned that scientists don't really undertand "sleep"; I decided that the problem with autism is that sleep overtakes autistic people permanently. The live life as if it is a dream, hence they don't interact with others, as dreaming is a passive state. Then I learned from a specialist that autistic children don't sleep well at all. I think a remedy may be to put them to sleep chemically on a strict regimen so that at least they don't need sleep during the daylight hours. I told her my theory and now they do that.

@15:55 Oh Sandy, maybe now that you are retired you will have the time to read the Bible. Right off the bat i can think of at least three other times teleportation was mentioned in the Good Book, and if we expand teleportation from the standard definition of "blinking/folding from on place to another" into all forms of super natural transportation, The Bible records dozens of them. And I think the Ramayana comes in at a distant second...

It's no fair telling us of three other times without mentioning them. My best guess is that you're counting Enoch, Moses, and Elijah. But I suspect Sandi means teleporting to a different physical place, not disappearing into the afterlife and back.
@thewanderer6444
@thewanderer6444 Жыл бұрын
@@ZipplyZane Those three are part of the dozens of other times. I was talking about Yashua the carpenters son, and Saul the man reborn as Paul. The first time is when He Disappeared in front of a crowd that was going to stone him. Second would be when He walked through a wall. The third event happens much latter when Paul and Silas are in jail... But that brings up angels and they kinda just blink in and out all the time so there is that too. Any way. The Son of Joseph was Who He Was and IS.
