@@dudesayingthingsedit; i would say it might help if she wasn't trying so hard. but i would be wrong. i would say she's trying to imitate a human, and i would say she fails at that. i haven't been able to watch a show after she sarted out, let's leave it at that. cheers, bbc. good job.

Oh man I miss QI! I live in South Africa and every week my family would catch the show via sattelite to watch the show on BBC Entertainment. This was before all the programmes became reality-based. I really miss the humour from back then.

When Jimmy Carr said that police got suspicious about the Souza guy because his camera crews turned up before the police, they acted like he was joking, but that's what actually happened. I remember it on the news at the time. It's one of my earliest TV memories

It's rather amusing how in light of events subsequent to this show, some of the jokes in this episode will be viewed differently to how they were originally intended. For example when Jack Dee references Rolf Harris "Rolf of Australia" and Jimmy Carr asks "have you filled in a VAT return? " at 22:20.

On the 'Hero Syndrome', I had a friend who used to always offer lifts and things to people, and she'd say something like 'come over to my house, then I'll drive you over to the party (or whatever)', but then as soon as they got to the house, she'd make up some reason why she couldn't then give them the lift, either cause the car broke down or whatever. And it was because she used to like making people dependent on her, then she by withdrawing the lift or whatever help, they'd have to stay with her at her place. It was this really weird way of controlling people. Anyway the wedding is next week, just thought I'd share.

Ok... can some of Jo's jokes be seen as sexist? Yes. Can some of Jimmy Carr's been seen the same way, Definitely. The core reason however why they are both allowed to get away with it is that it's obvious that it's an act, as evident by their general style and moments of self-depreciation. Compare Jo to someone like Bridget Christie - where 3/4 of the time you're not sure what the point of her feminism inspired jabs at men or society in general is, and that she just genuinely (like Trisha Goddard) has some animosity towards the opposite sex - There's obviously a lot of male comedians who can also hall into that definition so I'm not claiming it's one sided. What this boils down to is personal preferences, and that ability to choose (as you can easily go watch an episode without Jo or Jimmy involved), as the second you suggest people should somehow lose their right to Free Speech, because what they say offends you, you've opened a slippery slope as to stop anyone possibly ever being offended, speech would have to be limited to 'Hi-diddily-ho neighbourino' and 'Jolly Good old bean'.
@halkitchen1838

It's clear that Bridget Christie's material comes from genuine anger at casual misogyny, but in my opinion it's justified and more importantly, funny, which I don't find Jo to be. I agree with the rest of your points though.
@siramea
@siramea 6 жыл бұрын
I am not familiar with Bridget Christie's work but I agree with your comment overall. Jo is a comedian, and comedy is subjective. I don't believe Jo hates men or her husband. That is her style of comedy. I don't like those particular jokes but do find her to be funny, in general. My least favourite regular is Phil Jupitus, his actions are forced and annoying.
@Plant_Parenthood

The big problem with jo is that her jokes are just not clever and they all have the same punchline. jimmy carr can be pretty sexist but his jokes are far less predictable and much more clever.

@ArranRWilliamson
@ArranRWilliamson 8 жыл бұрын
Dominic Kelly They are the most changeable organisms we know, hence the constant race to find new antibiotics to keep up with them. To say that a bacterial cell is a single celled organism and were single celled before we were here isn't an answer. There are millions of different bacteria living on your body and are unique to the environment of your specific intestinal lining/skin/nose/mouth/urethra etc.. These types of bacteria were not around millions of years ago, they are new and necessary for your survival. I can't see your point.
@mbcustomcycles4823
@mbcustomcycles4823 8 жыл бұрын
+Arran Williamson you are confusing evolution with measurable lifetime factors.... the bacteria living on us is not demonstrably the same as bacteria living on my grandfather. but they are still single celled and have been for millions of years.... they have not changed. we rely on them to continue to do their simple jobs. and yes the bacteria that live in our skin were around before us and are not new, thats why we have the skin we do because the bacteria were already there to facilitate it. Our bodies evolved to use the bacteria that was already there. just because we discover new types all the time does not mean they are new to the earth

Jimmy, I would tend to disagree. It is not a noble thing to want to be a hero. It is a noble thing to want to be heroic but wanting to be a hero suggests to me a desire for attention rather than nobility.
@GriffinPilgrim

Cathy Earnshaw True, true. It's a motive thing really; if one wants to do good things mostly for a reward of some kind (money, fame etc) then, while it's still the right thing to do one is not a better person for it. If one wants to do good things mostly just because they are good things there's no reason not to enjoy any rewards that come as a result. Just as long as one would have done the same thing even without the rewards.

On the subject of Firefighters, it reminds of how in Ashes to Ashes Series 03, I think, how it featured an episode where an Arsonist was a Firefighter but he was also an ex-soldier who fought in the Falklands War, how he suffered from losing his comrades or "brothers", later finding out as a result, his wife slept with his brother after he returned and turned to causing fires rather than preventing them, all to make everything better, kind of ironic as well as sad I guess right? But, yeah, this is an interesting point worth looking into out of curiosity, is this a common thing or not among the Fire Brigade or just Film and/or TV Series History, shall we say? I wonder...

I never get it when adults say that being a teenager is the best point in your life. You're at an age when you do sometimes feel like life is worthless- and at this point in your life you go to school and get told that your exams are coming up and if you don't do x, y and z you will fail at life. Then you have to do a lot of science lessons- and all the science lessons are about how the world is ending, all the animals are going extinct and it's all our fault and now we have to fix it (I remember, when I was twelve or thirteen, being told by a geography teacher to colour in blue every bit of a map that was below a certain point. Then she told us to mark our houses on teh map with an x and see if our families would survive the great flood that would happen when the ice caps melted.) Your body is changing- which feels awful, by the way- and you start getting that feeling whenever you look in the mirror that something is wrong. Then people tell you that this is the best time of your life.

+Cheeseanonioncrisps This is a great matter of perspective. Think of telling your parents: "I hate school, I never want to go again!" and they reply with: "When you're grown up, you'll wish you could go back to school again." As a child this makes sense to none of us, but when faced with adult responsibilities and financial troubles, most of us would kill to go back to a time when all that was required of you was to try and enjoy day after day of learning.

"...in your life you go to school and get told that your exams are coming up and if you don't do x, y and z you will fail at life." Whoever said that was only interested in fucking someone up. Moreover, what, exactly, IS failing at life? The only measure of failing at life, that I can determine. is not actually having any. Ie., never being born/being stillborn. In which case no one is able to tell that person (non-person) that they will fail at life.

So there’s no benefit of a sauna nothing that it’s good for? I would’ve said that it’s at least good for stress relief cos one feels so relaxed after a good sauna. Also blood circulation gets activated, definitely, and just a hunch, but I do think it might help to keep your immunity system alert too, but that’s just a guess/feeling :) but I think an actually hot sauna like 90 celcius for a short time or many short times with cooling in between and drinking water (not alcohol though That’s the custom in finland) would be the best.

Mosquitoes are not pollinators and their loss would have little or no affect on the environment, except for the thousands of people who would live instead of dying of malaria et al; and that could be a problem. I have written Bill Gates about feeding and educating all these people who seem already to be starving. I wonder if he's thought it through?

2 mins 18 seconds, you've heard Jo Brands entire repertoire. "I'm Gross" "Men are shit" "my husband...." how she's had such a long career and why she still gets on TV is beyond me.

WTF are you talking about? Most comedians, male or female, don't even have the same sense of humor. For example, JImmy Carr is nothing like Bill Bailey, Neither of them are similar to BIll Burr etc. ect. Brand has had the same schtick since I watched on channel 4, 20 odd years ago. She was funny back then, but c'mon, get some new material.

Leonardo was apprenticed to the SCULPTOR Verrocchio, and the story (originated by Vasari, who often got things wrong, as he had only decades-later gossip to guide him) is a load of bollocks. For what grain of truth there is in the story, Verrocchio may have thought that Leonardo could take over the studio's painting commissions so that Verrocchio could concentrate on sculpture. Even this version is iffy, at best. I'm always astonished by how little the QI panels know about art history.

Jo Brand’s cycle of jokes 1. “My body is shit” 2. “My marriage is shit” 3. “My husband is fat/old/tired/weak” 4. Mention the name of random media figure that has nothing to do with the subject matter and everyone gives a courtesy laugh (out of fear that they’re not clever enough to get the reference, rather than realizing that the reference is bollocks) 5. Try to make everyone uncomfortable with a sexual reference. Repeat ad infinitum and somehow make a whole career out of it.

Go West is actually by The Village People, the same guys who sang YMCA and co. But yes, it is sung at football matches. There are many different chants with that tune.

Based on the saying "If you don't use it you lose it"', I'd say we're losing senses we don't even realize we had for that very reason ; we're blotting out our own abilities with built in deodorizers, ear plugs, a button to push for virtually every function. Wiping our own asses is the one we can all claim, and that's about it.

An episode I hadn't yet seen, but which now having seen it reminds me of the adage, A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. What is human cannot be encompassed in a half-hour show, no matter if the host is Stephen Fry. We should apply another adage, "For entertainment purposes only."
