Doesn't a tracked vehicle steer by just braking one track and driving the other?

yes, but since WWII both tracks can be driven at the same time through a differential

That would be a good thing if you're trying to sneak up towards the enemy. Might even improve on the heat signature.

Abrams is already pretty quiet compared to conventional tanks. The biggest sound issue is the tracks. The electric transmission’s biggest advantage is weight.

That sound is annoying for the crew and those nearby. But it carries less far than a diesel.
