@@john.premose It was a play on words: 're-entry' means re-entering the Earth's atmosphere. Lee was playfully insinuating that Sandi meant re-entering the person. Can't believe that needs to be explained to you. Lee Mack evidently has nothing on your comedy knowledge.

I knew the answer to this before Series S XL aired a few years ago. The new coating is anti bacterial too. The tours of the International Space Station filmed by the commanders every now and again for the ESA. They are extremely fascinating and well worth watching. They do a complete fly through and explain every system in complete detail. This particular lavatory is in node 3 with the treadmill, gym and the Cupola. It’s shared by four astronauts. It’s one of the most vital systems on board the station as it’s one of two systems for water recycling. The other lavatory is in the older part of the Space Station share by the two cosmonauts.

Dunno why they were so disgusted about the idea of recycling the water. It's not like they drink the piss directly. Goes through a treatment process... What do they think we do here on earth with our waste? Goes to sewage treatment plants, then the water goes back to the rivers, and then we drink it again too...

tbf we also have the natural water cycle, which adds an additional level of purification. it's not like we're drinking water straight from sewage plants or rivers. in fact, the idea that the water we drink comes from rivers is a massive simplification in any case (it doesn't all come from rivers, and in most cases is subject to additional treatment upon collection anyway) recycled drinking water in a tiny enclosed system is unequivocally recycled from recent bodily wastes, unlike drinking water in most places on earth, and despite it being obviously safe and potable in the former instance there remains the knowledge of its provenance absent from our own drinking water. hence disgust well you did ask

The Space Station actually has multiple toilets. The one featured here is on the U.S. Segment of the Station. The Russian Segment also has one. Each spacecraft also has facilities, but those are only used while the spacecraft are not attached to the Space Station. On one of the early Dragon missions, they discovered a leak in the waste system. Nothing entered the cabin and no critical systems were affected, but they had a bit of a mess to clean up.

@lhei_tayuun
@lhei_tayuun 19 күн бұрын
Because bodily processes are continuous, everyone almost always has a little something in the bladder. Defecation involves a lot of muscles, some of which put pressure on the bladder and encourage urination. Men are better set up structurally to control flow from the bladder; it's part of the ammunition-swapping mechanism, so to speak. It's also why men are generally better able to hold it, and in greater volumes. As a guy, if I felt the urge to do both and I attempted to defecate, it would generally be both; I could consciously avoid voiding my bladder at the same time, but I can't really think of a situation where that was necessary, and I probably only know that I can because... I just wanted to try one time, I guess. In my defense, I knew it was theoretically possible because dropping the kids off at the pool shortly after strangling Shai-Hulud didn't always imply opening a lemonade stand, even if i was fully stocked on lemon juice. So to speak~

Most of that cost is in installing it in space. The rocket costs that much, not the toilet
@EebstertheGreat
@EebstertheGreat 19 күн бұрын
No, none of that is launch or installation or anything else NASA did with it. That's the cost just to design, make, and deliver the toilet to NASA. Well, almost. Technically, NASA awarded a $26,424,533 contract to Raytheon for _two_ of these toilets. Only one has been installed so far, but the price tag covers both and (with some additional funding) perhaps more. Most of the money is for the design, not the construction. Packing, launching, and installing the toilet costs a lot as well, but not _that_ much. The typical cost to launch something to the ISS is $20,000/kg, and each toilet weighs around 45 kg (which is less than the older ones), so to launch both you're looking at around $1,800,000.
