Thanks for the explanation. May I ask does it mean that as long as a NAS has a USB port, it can use a UPS? I am considering the Qnap TS-253D but donno if it can use a UPS.
@MikeFaucher
@MikeFaucher 3 жыл бұрын
The TS-253D has USB ports in the rear and the front so you will be able to use the USB cable supplied with the UPS to attach to the TS-253D. Just make sure you get a UPS that communicates with USB and not a serial port. Hope that helps.

You don't need a USB port UPS. I currently write a article about how to config a regular ups(less then 50$) with NAS. You can find out here: shorturl.at/awxPY.

should you also connect the PC itself to the nas to be controlled by the master (Qnap NAS with usb cable) - does the PC connect also and is aware of the nas? to turn off on its own? would hate for the PC or writing files to be disturbed?

So this is a great question. The best answer is to use 2 UPS units, One for the NAS and one for the PC. Only one cable can be attached and only one devices can be controlled. The UPS master function only works with other NAS units as far as I know. Hope that helps.

Can you connect two different brand NAS let said an QNAP and an Synology NAS with one UPS that only have one USB port/connection? Does the UPS slave work with different brand NASs or only work on two same brand NAS?
@MikeFaucher
@MikeFaucher 2 жыл бұрын
If Synology supports the feature (you will have to verify it) it should work but I have never tried it. Synology tends to be slower in rolling out features so I would do some research first. The other and potentially better option is to buy two smaller UPS units, one for each, and not worry about the slave feature. Remember for the feature to work the rest of your network has to be up so often it is easier to buy multiple smaller units.

@@MikeFaucher thank you, I appreciated. I'm looking for a all in one solution mean I'm looking for a big whole unit for my network and Nas setup

Thanks for this. As part of my slow learning process, I realized today I need the NAS on the UPS. I live in Houston, but we get so many glitches it seems like we are in the third world. But today, I just stupidly flipped the breaker to do some electrical work and only realized what I had done after getting the warning email about the volumes not being clean :( I only have one UPS and it protects my Server 2012 (running WHS in a VM). I have Cyberpower's PowerPanel running on the Server and it seems to work OK in shutting down the server. However I don't see a way to have it also shut down the NAS. Do you have any ideas on how it could control the NAS over the network? Being that I just blew a bundle on Ironwolf drives for the NAS, I'd rather not buy another UPS. Thanks again.

Unfortunately getting a low cost UPS is the best answer. Something small that runs a minimum of 20 minutes. Very well worth it though. Good luck and let me know if I can help

@@MikeFaucher Thanks for the quick reply. When up in the wee hours last night, I decided that might be the anwer. What model are you using? I hope it's inexpensive :)

@@boggle37 If you click on SHOW MORE in the video description I have the links to all the ones I use from the cheapest to the more expensive. The cheapest should run your NAS for 20-30 minutes so you could probably get one even smaller one. I tend to error on the conservative side so I prefer one that is slightly larger. Hope that helps.

@@MikeFaucher Thanks. Didn't notice it. I have an old CP1000PFCLCD I realized the battery must be about shot and ordered a new one. Spent a lot of time on the Cyberpower site looking at confusing product descriptions. Based on your choices, it seems that we don't need a true sine wave unit. What I found disturbing was the number of bad reviews of these things on Amazon. Mine is years older and never a problem. Hope the quality control hasn't gone downhill.

@@boggle37 I have had nothing but great results with CyberPower. One suggestion, if you use after market batteries, plan on changing them in a year. I recently had an 8 hour power outage and the two UPS units that I used third party batteries lasted about 2 minutes while the other 5 units lasted an hour or more. I have since replaced the two batteries and added another CP1000PFCLCD for my plex server. Glad you found one and good luck.

I bought myself a SALICRU SPS-HOME UPS and even though its plugged into my QNAP TS-128A via USB. It doesnt show that USB info at the bottom. In fact it doesnt even know the UPS is connected. How can a UPS have a usb/nas port and not even work??? and yes it is a NAS port and not a charging port like some. Why isnt there a strict compatibility so ALL brands work. I shouldn't have to bugger about trying find one that actually works. One of the hardest purchases in recent memory :/
@MikeFaucher
@MikeFaucher 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that. Have you checked the QNAP compatibility list for UPS units? There are two SALICRU units listed that claim they should work but do not report the remaining times correctly. I am guessing it may be a compatibility issue.

@@MikeFaucher Thanks. Ive been to the QNAP compatibility list and there is only a few listed there. Doesn't look like they update it very much. They're a bit too pricey for what I want really. Beginning to think I should of just got myself a sata enclosure and have a normal backup instead.
@MikeFaucher

@@t3chnod3lic Even if not fully compatible with your UPS is it still protecting it and the QNAP you have will do a much better job in the long run with all the features than a SATA box.

So your're saying connect 1 NAS to the UPS. where does the other NAS connect
@MikeFaucher
@MikeFaucher 3 жыл бұрын
If one NAS is connected via USB to a UPS it will serve as a control master so if other NAS units are connected to a UPS can be controlled,, you can control the other UPS units from the master. This is for control only, you still need all UPS units plugged into some kind of UPS they just do not need a USB connection to tell them to shut down.

@@MikeFaucher I know the back of my UPS has two master outlets need to find the manual. I will connect 1 NAS to the master UPS outlet and the other NAS to the otlet control by the master, will double check the manual. Thanks for all the help. Great information
@MikeFaucher
@MikeFaucher 3 жыл бұрын
@@ronkali5365 Just to clear, each QNAP should be plugged into the UPS bu on one of the QNAP units can directly read the UPS via a USB cable. Other QNAPs should be plugged in but will rely on the one QNAP to be the master and control up to 6 other units. Look closely at the video starting around 2 mins. You will see your main nas read the ups from the USB, then I listed the IP address of the other NAS units so they can be told to shut down.
