@@NathanJ-E There isn’t any “confirmation” but Layne has done this before, so I’m guessing he did it again. It would also make sense that it’s him because it’s a part of the percussion.

This song along with "Dust In The Wind" were my favorite "Kansas" songs when I was growing up and in my humble opinion VoicePlay absolutely nailed this! They all were amazing & Omar fit in so well. I've always loved Eli & it's really nice to see him "take over" in this a few times. Nothing against Earl but I think Eli was stuck in his shadow a bit and now really has a chance to shine. Eli, J & Omar just killed the harmonies & Geoff's bass along with Layne's vocal percussion are always stellar. It was also nice to have a bit of Layne singing in there. Love your reaction as always & looking forward to seeing your reaction to Geoff's "High & Dry" cover.

Brilliant reaction! With the "you" in mind, it might be more of a technique thing. Singing a more closed vowel "ooo" on a B4 chest note is insanely hard, so opening it up to more of an "aaah" sound will have given him more space to deliver the note. Love your commitment to VoicePlay reactions, they are a stunning group (my favourite a capella group) and I always enjoy your videos!

You are correct. He was up in the top of his range, and trying to sing it as "ooooo" would have given a more tight, strained sound. It's very common for singers to change the pronunciation of a word in service of the note.

i agree, but he could have gone to more of an 'yoh' instead of 'yah', i think; the difference in vowel-space from his and the others' wouldn't've been quite so drastic.

Like Qofy's, that "you" grabs my ear each time I hear it. Like @wh15p, I've learned from the voice coach reactors that singers modify vowels to get a fuller sound on difficult -to-sing notes. Still, Omar has an AMAZING, powerful voice, and I feel like I've heard him reach this high without such extreme modification. In this case, he changes YOO, not just to YAH, but to the diphthong YAH-OW, which is unusual. I think it's that unusual-ness that grabs my ear, especially in contrast to the other guys singing YOOO. That being said, I'm always glad when I see a Voiceplay video featuring Omar. I've watched some of his performances from those TV competitions. Those shows reward: super-loud, super -long-held notes, and extreme runs. So naturally, Omar did a LOT of all that on TV. With Voiceplay, all that is there, but toned down to (what I see as) tasteful levels. VP is a gorgeous showcase for his talent and skill! P.S. Plus, he makes an amazingly convincing elf in Dragonborn! 😊

Love how into this you are QoFy! Carry On My Wayward son has one of the best guitar melodies in rock and was even in the video game Guitar Hero II,and of course Geoff is killing recreating those lines. But you're right that they're at another level, all of them bringing something to it. They have their own spin on it. Plus, as a side note, all the fans of the show Supernatural are freaking out about this cover because it's got a special place throughout that Fandom. I LOVE this song. The best of Kansas for me. I saw Kansas live years ago. I’ll get a lot of heat for this, but I don’t like Geoff’s part in this. Some of it is okay. But some parts don’t go with the song for me. I loved everyone elses’s part. All in all, really cool. This is the 1st VP song I’ve heard. I’m too addicted to PTX and HF to add another group. But I love QoFy’s reactions so when I saw the title, I went for it.

This song is in my top ten all time favorite songs. It's part of the soundtrack of my life. I didn't think anyone could do a cover that was worthy of the original. I was blown away!!! Hands down Geoff is my favorite of the group, but only because I have a thing for bass. I love that he finished it as a solo! Too cool.

Omar was a bit too broad and open on that 'you'; he probably could have hit it just as well a bit more closed. not using IPA, it was a bit more like a 'yah' with the 'oo' just at the end; it also twisted my ear a bit. Loved Geoff's imitation of the bass (i don't know if Kansas did it with a bass guitar or stand-up bass) line that is emblematic of the song, right after the entry and before Omar's first verse. i'd forgotten about this song and how much i love it.

Hi. Just got the food shopping done which is good because the state of Colorado is going back into a heavier lockdown tomorrow.
