In this video, you'll learn how to create a slope graph using the Power BI Line Chart visual.
Slope graphs are a great alternative to Power BI line graphs, bar graphs, and tables. They are particularly useful when you are comparing a measure across a number of category values and over two specific time points, such as this year and last year or this month and last month. I've used the change in backlog between this month and last month as an example in my demonstration.
The primary advantage of using a slope graph lies in its simplicity. It leverages the pitch and direction of the slope to offer a clear visual representation of both the magnitude and direction of change in a value for each category displayed. This visual representation is substantially easier for us to discern than other alternatives, such as clustered column charts or tables of numerical values.
At the time of recording, the functionality in Power BI wasn't perfect, but it was sufficient for setting up a compelling slope graph and beginning to integrate these into our visual narratives.
I utilized dynamic labels as a sort of workaround and also discussed how to configure a dynamic y-axis maximum point. This approach aids in avoiding crowded labels at the uppermost part of the slope chart.
Next, you'll learn how to implement some conditional formatting to highlight data labels if a value has increased over the specified period.
Lastly, you'll learn how to establish a tooltip page to display supplementary information related to the value of the change between the two time periods being compared.
