So, what pops out to me is Herbie. He reacts and he feeds. He's basically the one shaping things when he comps, gathering things he hears Tony and Ron play, reacting to them and the soloist and throwing back development ideas. This quintet was basically five sets of ears that listened as one. The first recording I heard of this group was Four and More, when I was 19. When I was told that's how old Tony was on that recording I simply was blown away.

Allow me to disagree sir. Music is like any other human activity. There is not best, among the giants of music (or any art form) who pushed the envelope. For example who is a better actor, DeNiro, Pacino or Nicholson? Those are living legends of acting, you can only tell whose work you prefer watching. But as far as the others, us, "mere mortal" musicians, you can tell who is the best, when you show up at an audition and compete with other fellow musicians for the gig. Wasn't young Vinnie the best out of 100+ drummers that Zappa auditioned to fill Bozzio's seat? He sure 101% was, and as Vinnie said on Famularo's interview, Zappa told him right after the audition that he took the gig, but out of courtesy had to audition the rest of the drummers, that were waiting outside of the room.

Just heard “Paraphernalia” of the Miles In The Sky album. Can’t get enough of the drumming in this tune the way Tony starts off on the hi hats and then switches to the ride when Miles enters the tune a couple bars then Tony goes right back to the hats and again to the ride when Miles re-enters the tune. It’s such an amazing thing. Miles rates that cool Williams ride like it’s his personal theme cymbal. Can’t hear that tune enough! Thanks as always for the Tony Profile!

I think generally we see the evolution of drumming so we can say "that came from here," but with the greatest players, like Tony Williams, there's subtle things that stay with the source (Him) Tony Williams will play some resolutions, but then come away from it with a diminuendo (for example) but subtly... uniquely musical and not something one would likely transcribe (for instance.) That's how he really blows me away time and time again!
@drumqtips
@drumqtips 9 ай бұрын
That's an excellent point! There are some things that stay with with the source. I love how you say that. That's what makes the masters who they are. It's not WHAT they play, but HOW they play it and most drummers miss those special nuances. Thanks Gary Indiana!

Q all of your lessons are great. But these with Tony Williams are superb. I learn so much from you. I know a bit about song form or structure in rock which most often has vocals. Intro, verse, chorus, bridge, repeat, outro. But usually in rock the time signature remains the same throughout the song (not at all true in prog rock of course). You are describing song form here in a cool and different light. The number of bars to the "top", changing time signatures (2/4, "threes" - 3/4 or triplets?, 5/4, etc.) are new to me. Cool stuff. I am 72 years of age. If I were a lot younger I would try to become a jazz drum student at your school. Keep up the great work for us Q. Best. Bill.

Great video. Dissecting the form with this masterful quintet is very helpful. Many a time I’ve started listening to the Plugged Nickel concert, then, getting caught up in Tony’s playing or being mesmerized by Herbie’s chord choice and rhythms, I’ve gotten lost in the form of the tune, sheepishly rewinding the cd! Love these reaction videos Q! Even as a drummer I often lose the form if I'm not super focused on counting during those Hemiola moments. (Talking about listening not even playing lol) Maybe you could do a lesson on how to stay in time/in the form while playing some sort of polyrhythmical Hemiola. How to hear the bigger structure while playing smaller polyrhythms inside, like they do. I would really love to find a way to work on that and get better. From what I hear, Miles didn't finish his solo at the second A , I think he finished at the top of the form, Herbie plays a Big chord and Tony crashes the ride symbol to make it clear, that they're at the top, Miles plays a couple of bars into it and then turns it over to Wayne, but Miles does end his solo at the top.
@drumqtips
@drumqtips 6 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment David. It's tricky hearing it because it's not the norm. Most solos end at the top of the form but Miles would often end his solos whenever he was finished, regardless of where he was in the form. In this case, the top of the form comes at 7:22 but he decides to play one more A section and finish his solo at the second A. The harmony is a clear give away because 8 measures after Mile's solo ends, Ron and Herbie play a pedal point of D7, which is setting up G minor which is gives a clear indication they are on the bridge.
@davidsheriff9274
@davidsheriff9274 6 ай бұрын
@@drumqtips You're absolutely right,my apologies. I listened to it a few more times, really concentrated and did some serious counting on my fingers and I finally got it. I have ended many of my solos in places other than the top of the form, but unfortunately, it's never been intentional 😁. I often have trouble knowing where they are in this band especially on The Plugged Nickel recording. If Miles and Wayne are not really outlining the chances in their lines, and Herbie is laying out or if he does play something it sounds more like a chord you would hear from Shoenberg than from Bud Powell, and if Ron is not playing roots and Tony is playing a lot of polyrhythms, it's very hard for me to be able to keep track of where they are in the form,listen to If I Were a Bell from The Plugged Nickel, can you keep track of where they are? Do you think they even got lost themselves and found themselves in different parts of the tune? Tony really did love Wayne, Tony was into the free stuff, he was the one that recommended Sam Rivers for the band and his favorite group at that time was Ornette. Miles talked about all this in his autobiography. He said Tony hated George Coleman because he was too inside and played the changes. Miles wrote that one night they were playing a show when George was in the band, Miles finished his solo, goes to walk off stage and Tony said to him"why don't you take George with you"? Ha ha ha. Did you know that after George left, everyone in the band was trying to talk Miles into hiring Eric Dolphy? One thing I have always wondered about this band is why they never played any of those great Wayne tunes from the studio records live,on their live gigs they would always just go back to the same standards, maybe because that's what Miles thought the audience wanted, I don't know.

Tony began playing with Sam Rivers when he was 13 and then with Jackie McLean at 16. Miles hired him away from Jackie at 17. he was too young to be playing in clubs and Miles made him grow the mustache to make him look older. Everybody talks about Miles Quintet but if you had asked Miles at the time, he would tell you that this was Tony's band. He was the driving force and controlled what everyone else was doing. If he didn't like what you were doing (as he often did with George Coleman) you would become acutely aware of it by what he did behind your solos. He challenged Miles with his playing, pushing him to higher places in the music. While Herbie and the others were a bit intimidated by Miles Tony would let his opinions be known and would constantly push Miles over things like hiring Wayne Shorter who's playing was more to Tony's taste. Miles even hired Sam Rivers for a brief moment, and you know that was all about Tony harassing him to. Young as he was Tony was on such a level that his thoughts and ideas about the music had to be reckoned with and were respected by those he played with. Back in the early seventies I saw Alan Dawson who was a teacher of a young Tony Williams, do a demonstration in the basement of a Buddhist church for Fibes drums, hosted by Sam Ash. Although it was about these fiberglass chrome plated and transparent acrylic drums it was also a lesson from a master. He talked about the importance of rock-solid fundamentals as well as playing to the melody instead of just being a timekeeper. You could see where Tony got his emphasis on technique and his sense of musicality that set him apart from other drummers.

Something happened to Tony in the 90’s. Not sure what, maybe it was his health but he was less meticulous. The ultra fast cymbal work sorta ended in the early 70’s when he adopted a rock aesthetic..

@@drumqtips before Tony, the drums and cymbals/ hihat were like separate instruments....you played the rythym on the cymbals or hats, the backbeat on the snare generally speaking even if some ghosting took place, and the bass followed the bass line. Tony integrated everything into a consolidated blanket of sound. Flaming between the toms and cymbals became a trademark but he did alot more as well. He just viewed the drumset and drumming in a new different way which is certainly why I include him. The stuff he did just wasn't done before. Innovation. And as a result he changed music along with it. This is just my opinion however. Not a right or wrong thing.

@@drumqtips Well his records sound different more musical than what I heard when I heard them in concert. I remember thinking that his compositions weren't that engaging for me; clumsy inorganic unlike Wayne Shorter. As a pianist I'm a Roy Haynes fan. I'm fascinated by Mark Giuliani and Chris Dave but also Paul Motian and strangely that drummer that played with Hiatus Coyote. I made my CD with Bob Moses. It was a long time ago when I heard Tony on that Yellow set playing his own compositions. I was fortunate enough to have a conversation with Mulgrew Miller during their break which was a real pleasure what a great pianist and statesman of our music.

The beginning of Toney's end came when he tried to emulate Billy Cobham's bombastic rock style. His seminal technique and natural expressionism was not tailored for that pompous, attention-seeking, money mongering, fashionista-flavoured format. He was more often than not like a fish out of water behind the huge yellow Gretch kit competing with wailing guitars and synthesizers, and only looked comfortable and sounded commanding when he returned to the small kit bop format. RIP child prodigy.
