In the early days of bicycling, it was very common for the biker to carry a .22 cal. pistol to protect the rider when biking in the rural areas from large farm dogs. It was accepted that a dog off the leash and off the owner's property, was fair game for a .22 cal bullet. Bikes were still uncommon and dogs often attacked (and still do attack) the strange "creatures" with the spinning wheels.

It's still pretty common for a cyclist to carry a smaller caliber handgun in rural areas to handle dogs, snakes, and some of the more aggressive wildlife. (coyotes, bobcats... etc) Dogs still pretty often attack cyclists too.

The Quackenbush was a good useful rifle for a particular job. They should make something similar today which would double as a walking stick.

Very nice. Handy as an emergency hunting rifle for small to medium small game. Not much chance of wasting ammo with a single shot rifle.

I have the rifle version of this - mostly full nickel - my grandfather would pay me $1 for each red squirrel I took with this. Very cute firearm for the days before bb guns!

There was another brand too. Kid's could earn them selling Christmas & Birthday cards. The one I had was a top break single shot, .22 short & long with a hammer. The stock was basically made with a pine 1×4 a little knurled screw broke the barrel when pressed down. But the name of the maker eludes me? Ahh I remember 'The Hamilton'! After a little research boy's could earn them by selling feed corn too. They were sold for $2.50 which was way more than what they were worth at that time. You could buy a .32 H&R revolver for about $3-$5 or a Steven's Crack shot ( falling block) for about $7. A much better rifle!

This gun is one I have never seen. Its usage is quite simple. But I don't like this kind of pistol grip, even though the .22 gun has low recoil. But this type of handle makes the gun look unattractive. But I like every gun that fires once. It's very classic. I like it. ♥

FYI these were a factory gun made from late 1800s to bout 1930smthn. They were met for younger guys. Adolescents. Marketing was all geared to like 12-14year Olds. U gotta understand, for example, my dad was born in 52' grew up in upstate NY in the Catskill mountains. He talks all the time about walking to Jr high school with a 22rile hunting, leaving in his licker all day, n hunting his way home. Wasn't till highschool he couldn't cuz they didn't allow guns on the bus, THE BUS LOLOL, IT WAS FINE TO HAVE A RIFLE IN UR LOCKER DURING HUNTING SEASON LOLOLOLOLOL times have sure changed

It's factory they made 3models from the late 1880's to the later 30's 2 with stocks 1 wood the other a steel skelton frame called the bicycle model which I own one and this model they where actually sold as a firearm for younger people

I remember once I was going to a meetup with two friends of mine, I was a bit late so I was going a bit faster. in the middle of the street there's a black snake, I can't stop nor go around and end up just lifting my legs up. reached the place of the meetup and casually started the conversation with "HEEY! I JUST RAN OVER A SNAKE! WHO WANTS A BELT?")
