Wonder how this pre and power amp would sound with a Tannoy HPD Dual Concentric or Altec 604 based speakers?

I had the 405 /34 / FM4 stack. Enjoyed it until I moved to a Linn stack, which I still enjoy.

Of course Quad was awarded the Queen's service medal for technological innovation in 1978. HM doesn't hand these out willy nilly. 'Nuff said!

I have an opportunity to buy a Quad 33 and 405. Whats your thoughts about this purchase? I do collect vintage gear and they seem in fantastic condition.

Depends on which versions. The 405-2 is better than the plain 405 by a long shot.the 405 can be upgraded fairly easy. If you do get a 34 make sure it is a late version 7 board model as per: quadrevisie.eu/quadrevisie.html#21a Earlier versions of the 34 had bad corrosion issues on the main boards. By version 7 they had sorted that all out. Make sure you open up the 34 and look carefully at the board as per the above link. Quad is very very good gear otherwise😉

The "click" when you turn your 34 on, i had it too. But my set got overhaul bij Quadrevisie.nl and they changed something in the 405-2 and now it is gone ! Also the set now plays like it is new. Perhaps you can come in contact with them ? You have such a nice quad set so it would be worth to have a look.

It really is a quad thing. As you will find out, it will very likely reoccur even in yours after awhile. Anyway I sold my 34 after upgrading it with a Dada Electronics kit and kept my two upgraded Quad 44 preamps. They are far far better than the Quad 34 preamps. More flexible too.😉

You had to place your speakers where wifey was happy with them, you did well as they still had some bass for poorly positioned speakers on a surface that resonates

Hi, I just had a quad 405-2 serviced because the left channel died and it seems to have stumped my tech, do you have any ideas. Thank you.
@navydiving3 жыл бұрын
What did your Tech actually do to the unit? Did he change out any of the major components? Did he check for bad solder connections? Should also check the PCB traces to make sure they are not corroded out. Have you considered doing a Dada Electronics upgrade like I did with mine? Often times swappping out all the major components (especially caps and problematic semi-conductors given their age now) will do wonders to an old unit. Here are the Dada kits available: shop.dadaelectronics.eu/dada-products/quad-revision-kits/ (see page 2 as well). I did the 88Euro one on mine but it took a long time to get the kit sent from Europe to the west coast of Canada here. Well worth the wait though. Where are you located?

@@navydiving Thanks for the reply. The Dada Electronics upgrade kit looks like the best course of action. The quad sounds great and I would like to have it as my long term amp. I trust the tech is competent and skilled as he owns a brick and mortar repair shop. The first iteration involved some recapping and replacing two transistors. The amp performed well for about 8 hours and then died. After that there was more recapping and replacing of a blown fuse and transistor. But the left channel died almost instantly. I'm in Victoria.

Great video! I know very well what you mean regarding cooperative interior design! I too have Quad 12L's but they are currently my surrounds for my entirely Quad L (Rosewood) 5.1 system. Anyways, I have the chance to buy this amp hence my viewing. Although it would be used to power a pair of Signet SL256 bookshelf speakers. Again, I enjoyed the video, thanks for sharing!

The 34 was normally with the 306. I also have a Quad 44 that is usually hooked up to the 405-2

Bi amp it. It will sound so much better.

vertical or horizontal biamp? Here is a biamp system I built and upgraded. It was fun and cool at the time (audio night with the boys) but does not pass wifeys litmus test for a long term system in her castle😉: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hHvHiXWImdOjqas

@@navydiving Horizontal. I have a Quad 34 and 2 Quad 306's. Linn LP12 & B&W 602S3's I went from a single amp to a bi-amp set up. Am amazed at the difference.

@Consuelo Patagonia Not sure. I'm not technical. This was recommended by my hi-fi shop and I'm glad they set it up for me. The difference is astonishing.
@davidcameron75973 жыл бұрын
@Consuelo Patagonia No modifications done to the amps as they were not converted to monoblocks. Leave them as they are. keep them in stereo and wire the horizontally. Yes, just one set of speakers from each amp. (I have the 306's). As for the cables, there is a company called flashbacksales.co.uk . They'll make whatever you want. Good luck.

@Consuelo Patagonia The speakers I have are B&W 602s3 2-way with 2 pairs of terminals.
