Your review is really good because it's not biased (like other Neural DSP fanboys who are way too intense). And like some people in the comments are pointing out, it's not that impressive compared to the sounds one can get from the HX Stomp and even the GT1000, from which the X Modded is worth the price alone. One thought that comes into mind about this thing, is that as it is only using roughly 50% of its process power (in your example at least) that leaves a lot of space for future improvements on their side (and I'm sure they took that into consideration). They are able to improve the existing models and add power hungry new ones, and their machine will be able to handle that. This is a very good thing to take into consideration, future wise.

Ola I’ve been following you for 10 years, and as far as an unbiased / No bullshit review goes, you were on top form with this video today 🔥 I like that overall your emphasis on this unit was on the tone, because that’s the true end result that matters when investing in something like this, rather than being side-tracked by how good the user interface is. I love your honest approach, your passion that caters for the metal guitar community and hard work ethic, it’s so inspiring and what’s made me continue to watch your videos. All the best for 2021, now I’m going to purchase an FM3!

@@19Cluj 1. All of these new modelers sound like real tube amps in recording, but to get that sound live, you would need to play it through a guitar cab. Playing through FRFR gets you the sound of a mic'd version of that amp/cab. Not to mention, the ease of using of just plugging into an interface and tons of other advantages over tube amps. 2. All studio engineer customers will use it. Reamping left and right guitars at the same time is a MAJOR thing, not only because it saves time, but because you can actually monitor your left and right guitars together while building the sound. This feature is what makes me think about switching from the kemper.
@saitenkiller3 жыл бұрын
@@jordanslither1502 Good point. I was thinking more in the direction of a whole band lineup playing through one Quad Cortex simultaneously. That's how they market the feature mostly and I just can't picture this use case becoming a major thing.

@@GrandPapa16 the routing and amount of dsp available to handle it just isn't quite there yet. I feel the exact same way. I think the Fractal amps sound better, and the Helix and Axe 3 can already do multi signal paths, and the Kemper already has a capturing process. Every unit needs tweaking of course. It's really the IR that matters the most. Any unit these days will have great usable amp sounds but the cab is the most important part and since they can all load IRs it comes down to preference. The Kemper, Helix and Fractal have more FX as of now, but if Neural can load more in and do cross compatibility with their plugins then I think the price and switch would be justifiable for most. The touch screen is really cool, but also makes it more fragile. There is also no computer editor yet, making it the only unit without one. After watching half a dozen videos it is cool, but it's not all the hype YET. Maybe in a future update ;)

@@Mark101dg Disagreed. The archetype plugins specifically are artist plugins, and I'm sure they receive part of the profits from the sales on their plugin. I would like to think that I'm supporting the artist paying for their sound. As for Fortin plugins and such, I'd think it'd be the same where Fortin makes a profit too and I love to support those companies as well. The Cortex has it's own stuff on it and wouldn't include that so it's not taking away from the work of those associated artists and companies.

@@JohnathanAbel I hadn't thought about it that way, you make a good point. I still think some of them could be included, provided a deal is made with those artists to cut them in on the profits or something.

I was waiting for this Ola's review and it seems fairly honest. In this video, QC sounds better compared to other video reviews I have seen but, I'm convincing more and more that it doesn't sounds good as other competitors at the moment. These tones sounds REALLY flat without dynamic compared to kemper, axe fx etc. Of course it is a new product and for sure it will improve a lot during the next coming years but today, in my opinion, it is not the best choice for a guitar player. Of course the touchscreen is amazing, the overall quality is impressive, 4 amps at the same time could be a game changer for a band in a live situation but... imho it lacks on the most important thing, the sound. Let's see in the future :)

@Douglas Castro uhm, so? Is it a problem for the CEO of the Neural DSP if, at the moment, I think it is an awesome product but still immature? It's a little ham-fisted, don't you think? 😉
@Ghost171103 жыл бұрын
Agree man. Even something as simple as a basic amp + cab 5150 patch on an Axe FX 2-3 is much more lively and responsive. This unit sounds just like the plugins, which is not a good thing imo as I’ve never found the Neural plugins to feel and sound as responsive as others on the market (ie TH-U, Helix Native, Mercurriall, etc). For the price I think the Fractal FM3 is still a better buy at $500 cheaper than the QC.

the one thing thats got me hyped af about the quad cortex is the team having said multiple times that they are gonna update it constantly with new amp models, new software (which would surely improve the quality of the sounds) and that the plugin will all be able to be used on the quad cortex. easy buy for me once they become available

Let me tell you a secret about those modelers as a former audio dsp engineer, there's a library that mathematically models the clipping curve of a pre-amp tube. A library for global tonestack that you can modify to make it fender or mesa boogie. A library that can deconvolve Impulse Responses. A library to capture frequency response of any physical system (this time a cab + mic combination). So every manufacturer is using those libraries one way or another. For average user, it works fine. But there's a downside of libraries. The tube clipping algorithm is the same for every "modeled" amplifier while they are totally different in the real life. When it's clean or realy high gain, you don't hear anything bad. The real struggle is to model at the edge of breake up sound. Because every amp have slightly different clipping signature, thus modeling those clipping signatures requires a lot of different algorithms, an algorithm for each amp. That's why they may never satisfy a dumble user, or a tweed, or a marshall plexi. You can see that the competition is towards having more input/output options, higher sampling rates, higher cpu speed etc. But it's never towards the most realistic one. Because all of them are the same.
@spanneng3 жыл бұрын
do you have an idea which amp sims excels at these breakup tones? some say Scuffham S-Gear excels in this area. also, "feel" department. But, as I don't have good interface and not having good chops for playing dynamically, I can't or I don't get that impression.

@@CemSaydam pretty sure Doug means they aren’t using them. Just because a library exists doesn’t mean every piece of software that does a particular thing uses the library. People often create their own libraries, particularly when it applies to a specialized application. Time consuming and expensive as a result, which is why some people use existing libraries. YMMV.

Yay, the next best thing until the next best thing arrives! 😂 At least I don’t have to worry about my amp going obsolete when the next modeler comes out. These things are really cool. And this particular unit seems to be very streamlined. The UI is brilliant. I’ll wait another year or two before I dive in. Everybody is like “it’s soooo close to the real thing”. When it gets there, I’m in. Until then, I’m perfectly happy cooking tubes.👊🏻
