Sony thinks installing a rootkit on your PC is appropriate. I think maybe we should filter a known malware provider if this case is upheld.

I think what Sony is doing is tantamount to saying that there is an illegal drug den at the end of the Street and the people who built and maintained the street are culpable because it allows access to that drug den.... That's kind of absurd

Taking a DNS provider to court is a really bad idea. It's infact a ridiculous idea. Just because other name resolution services will still be advertising. Also the resulting domino of cases for failing to block sites by a single entity is gonna be interesting. Taking a DNS provider to court is like taking the internet to court.
@ScottPlude

I agree 100%. I only wish normal users (our grandparents for example) truly knew how the internet worked. Currently, only .001% of the world knows why squeezing a dns provider is silly. If our grandparents knew how dumb this was, their voice might make this go away.

That is why they are doing it, they all want total control of everything its one of the reasons what Skycoin and their Skywire meshnet is so interesting to me as its being built to withstand this kind of attack and i feel like with the way things are going pretty much everything is going to be censored or controlled. But Skywire is going to save us from that.

There are a lot of websites that have some kind of facebook login, even if it's only for comments. That probably raised the amount of DNS queries a lot. And WhatsApp and Instagram surely didn't help to make the situation any better. Sony taking Quad9 to court is ridiculous. If someone commits a criminal act, then sue the criminals. If someone steals your wallet, then runs away in their motorcycle, you're not going to court against the gas stations, or the highway administrators, etc.

People need to stop acting surprised when copyright leads to untenable outcomes and recognize that this is the nature of copyright. You can't domesticate a system who's foundational premise is antithetical to the liberties necessary for civilized society to function. People must be free in their persons and property to the extent that they do not infringe on the same freedoms of others. This by it's very nature precludes copyright because copyright condones the asymmetric infringement of freedom by one party upon another.

As for servstale, should be based on SOA, this means extra lookups caching etc, but it could be likened to a slave, the data on a slave is valid until the expire time, which is commonly one or two weeks to a month, at that time slaves discard and will not serve data, so treat it the same

It's not practical for everyone to install their own DNS resolver and Quad9 also filters out malicious sites.
@Andrew-jh2bn
@Andrew-jh2bn 2 жыл бұрын
@@LAWRENCESYSTEMS it isn't as hard as you think. A pi hole can block malicious sites (and advertising) and you could just install unbound on that same device for the actual DNS resolution. DHCP let's you designate backup resolvers, so you don't have to lose all internet when your device goes down. Still though, you're right that it is something for more technical users.

@@Andrew-jh2bn not really backups... The fastest response wins... You could argue that local will always resolve faster... Just bringing to your attention how DNS typically works... If a server is listed, it is fair game and the order of your list does not typically matter

I understand the concern about the German lawsuit, but services like Quad9 already have mechanisms to be selective about what they resolve (malware and adult filters, for example). A similar concept exists in the email space where spam lists have been a thing for a long time. This is accepted, and isn't considered censorship by most. I'll have to read their response because perhaps I'm missing something.
@LAWRENCESYSTEMS

The big difference is choosing what website you want to block and having it dictated you by private companies based on how they see the world.
@stevenmishos
@stevenmishos 2 жыл бұрын
@@LAWRENCESYSTEMS I don't see the difference -- it's just a belief in one category is worthy of blocking, versus another isn't. Nobody wants spam or malware. Companies don't want adult content, but some individuals do. Companies don't want copyrighted content, but many individuals do. Anybody who subscribes to any sort of filtering service has already abdicated their individual choice to a private company. The way I see this playing out is companies like Sony will work with threat protection list providers, and companies like quad9 will enforce the filter list as they already do (basically -- that Sony has a right to protect their content, but they directed their ire at the wrong infrastructure provider).

@stevenmishos
@stevenmishos 2 жыл бұрын
@@LAWRENCESYSTEMSas stated, I think they directed their ire at the wrong party. At the most fundamental level however, do you agree that Sony has the right to enforce their intellectual property rights? If so, somebody will be on the hook to remedy an infraction and complaint. If not, we simply disagree on that fundamental principle.

@@stevenmishos I find it interesting they specifically attacked Quad9. Looking for one of the biggest providers with the smallest budget. But hey, we're talking about a company (Sony) that has done questionably legal things before (say virus to 'protect their content'). So, this is a company that does screwy things and one shouldn't trust them!
