Joseph Witrick thank you,for the compliments, that guitar is really incredible, it gets played so much that every time I string it up, I stay up all night, night after night, playing..and wear out the strings, then it stays unplayed for months, I hate changing strings, I have like 12 guitars,and no time.so usually, only 2-3 have playable strings at a time. That tele has an acoustic pickup in the bridge, and kinda simulates an acoustic,I always forget about it though, thanks for commenting on this, u reminded me, this Wednesday, I’ll put new Diaddario 9-42’s on her and polish up that oil finish, by mid next week I should have it going again, I just changed stings on my Dean and Strat, so I’m kinda eager to get them out now too.. I usually get new stuff up on Wednesday’s.. thx

Btw the body is mahogany,the fingerboard is zebrano (zebra wood) the front of the body is highly figured,flamed, spalted maple, only a small percentage of maple ,less than 5,% have any flame at all,and the dark,"spalted" mineral streaks come from a tree's branch soaks in a river for a while, water eventually evaporating,leaving only the minerals in the wood.. like semi petrification.. this has both flame and spalt which is very interesting looking,kinda like petrified wood

Primitive Three barrel bridge but those inefficiencies are part of what gives it its raunchy sound.

I heard that they put the snot of a beetle mixed in the felt that helps it to hold its shape and lets it be reshaped. Is this true?
@KTGHATS3 жыл бұрын
It's worse. Not snot. It's poop. Have u ever heard of Shellac? We used it in arts n crafts & woodworking class in summer camp (to give a yellowed, aged finish to decoupage) It's like a natural laquor, basicallythe sap of a tree, eaten by these beetles that live on the tree. They eat it and then crap it out into little piles that stick on the trunk of the tree. The little lumps of excreted sap are collected by hand and filtered, and that's shellac. They used that for hats, but there are other modern alternatives that are used instead of Shellac these days. Guess what? That crap is the same stuff that makes Skittles and Jelly beans shiny, it's called, "confectioner's glaze" and I freaked out the first time I realized I'd been feeding shit to my little boy. Halloween candy is filled w the stuff. It's considered"natural" too they can use that and still carry the name,"all natural" gross. I'd rather eat candy that wasn't shiny.

Question why do you steam after putting hairspray?
@KTGHATS2 жыл бұрын
Steaming is essentially taking the thin, plasticky coating in a hat(all hats have it) and melting it for a second, the steam melts that hard coating,and while it’s softer you change its shape, then u hold it totally still while it hardens. The stiffening is what holds the shape in place. Most older hats get worn and they become soft, too soft to fix w steam..because the plasticky coating has broken down In this case, u need to replenish the stiff coating, let it dry.. so u can stem the hat, If a Hat is too soft, steaming does nothing. That’s why 89-90% of the people steaming hats out there get zero results, it’s all about manipulation of that stiff coating. The hair spray is the same chemical agent as hat stiffener, it’s made of acetone

Just discovered this. My Stetson Open Road 6x western felt in silverbelly seems to pass the durability tests. Presuming the price point can be achieved based on the felt being 6x as opposed to more premium felt?
@KTGHATS3 жыл бұрын
Not exactly sure what u are asking here... The 6x is the standard, classic model. It’s rabbit fur, western felt. They came out with a softer version,made of dress felt,like a fedora, called the royal deluxe series, that’s very similar, but it’s less stiff, and more flexible, comes in fedora type colors.. the quality is not better or worse, just different. These are all rugged hats..I generally am okay with wearing a western in rain, but not a fedora... but the newer open road 6x is not a hat I’d suggest wearing in rain, the brim will get wavy and lose its crisp quality. It’s a unique hat , very stiff and not too thick..it’ll last u a lifetime ..just don’t use it for a rain hat, The 6x is fine, they make an all beaver version now..I haven’t tried it yet.. not sure if I would pay beaver prices for an open road, but many folks would I guess.

Don't worry about a black limo full of Stetson heavies coming to pick you up.LOL..... I know you know this Kev but for those who don't; Stetson doesn't exist anymore as a hat manufacturer but 'Stetson hats' are made under licence by a company called Hatco, down in Texas. It's a huge factory where a lot of now defunct brands that used to make great hats, are made.(they just bought the name.) Many of the branded hats they manufacture are the same but with different brand labels stuck on them although apparently, they do produce a few good models but overall, they're just mass produced products,....we are a long way from the good old days of proud hat makers but that is partially due to customers too who tend to treat hats as any other disposable consumer items. Hold on, a black limo just pulled up.
@KTGHATS6 жыл бұрын
Yes, Hatco / Hatbrands also makes Dobbs, Resistol, Charlie One Horse.. they gobbled up all those brands, now they’re just different “lines”... different logos on the sweatbands and linings...same materials. Hard to say if it’s a good or bad thing, without those companies getting bought out, who knows if they would have lasted this long on their own, Stetson has had some super high points and low points in their history, right now they have stability, consistently and staying power.. Dress hat companies need to cut corners in order to produce hats in America at a decent price...if they made them like they did in the 40’s & 50’s, (Beaver felt, hand sewn, silk linings..etc) if they did, they’d cost us $500-1200 instead of $195-250. Yes, we miss the old,hand crafted, Charlie One Horse hats w real bullet holes,rattlesnake heads,animal bones,hand airbrushed works of art...that type of stuff are classified as custom hats now, and available by custom boutique hat makers,like in our workshop.. but without Hatco, those cool hat companies may have dropped out of business completely,disappeared.. who knows? The hat biz is tough, to give u an idea.. when I started in 94, there were 4 other really huge hat shops in NYC like us, now there’s only us.. (and a couple of religious hat shops in Brooklyn,who primarily sell all wide brim,black hats to the Orthodox & Hasidic Jewish clientele) all the other shops like us dropped out. and if you..AAAAHH!!! THE BLACK LIMO JUST PULLED UP..HELLLLLLP MEEEEEE!!!

@@KTGHATS Fun video. If you want a hat that is similar to Stetsons from long ago - try Akubra. CampDraft and Fed IV are good and durable open crown hats. They protect you rather than you needing to protect them. I have an old 5X beaver Stetson with a brown leather band and it is very nice, but many modern Stetsons are not all that. Matt Deckhard tried to bring some quality back and was able to get a few good items out there. My recent Stetsonian is okay, but the daily hat is an Akubra which I shaped from open crown and steamed at home. It has been around the world and in all environments for 10 years. Still going strong. But as you say, quality and cost are not necessarily connected. My first Akubra cost me under a hundred bucks - delivered.

Kevin I have my grandfathers homburg. It is a black Borsalino probably bought in the 50's and it is super nice felt and in great shape from a hat shop in Copenhagen Danmark with the shops logo in the lining. It is about a 7 1/4 and i need it to be a 7 3/8. I tried gently using a hat stretcher but it's still too tight. Can it be sized up an eighth? Steam or no? Need a new sweatband to make it bigger? Should i take it to a real hatter? I'm in California so your shop is a bit far but i go to Arizona alot and there is Watsons hat shop just curious if it is even worth trying to get it sized for me? Love your videos!
@KTGHATS3 жыл бұрын
It’s not going to be easy, you might want to bring it to a good hatmaker to be resized, steam? No. That will shrink and dehydrate the vintage sweatband, it’ll make it worse. If I had my hands on it,I could do it at the shop, but it’s not easy, There is a Reed inside the leather band that causes the bat to shrink back when u stretch it,it’s like a ring of nylon fishing line that stretches when u stretch the hat, but then it’s made to contract and shrink back a few minutes afterwards. So unless u cut that Reed,it’ll always shrink back, you would need to carefully cut the Reed,to relieve the pressure , then hand stretch it, over your knee, or across your chest, there’s only so much u can go with that hat jack, it’ll leave a huge stretch make where the jack was. You can lone the hat jack up with the ribbon band, so when it makes a stretch mark, it’s disguised by the edge of the ribbon band. That hides the stretch mark from the hat jack a lot, lot more. You’ll need to watch a few of my videos about cutting the Reed, then after u cut it, u can start stretching again, and line the edge of the hat jack up with the ribbon band to hide the big stir step stretch mark it’s gonna make. You’ll need to overstretch it , it will always contract somewhat. Also, hat jacks won’t work alone, you need to steam the outside of the hat while you crank it open. First cut the Reed, then stretch,, Keep the steam on the outside of the hat,never let it touch the sweatband, always steam only the outside of the hat, on the felt,right where the hat jack makes contact, steam through the felt. Don’t over steam it, you’ll shrink and burn the vintage leather, which is already dehydrated. Slowly steam, then crank, steam, then crank..then let it cool totally, before taking out the hat jack, leave it in for a half hour or so.when it’s cool, remove it, Then u can stretch it over your knee or across your chest if it needs more. You can’t stretch TOO much w the hat jack, it’ll distort the crown. Watch a few videos on the Reed first kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3W9gqWgobSdjrM kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZqGWfo2wjKarg9E Then watch me stretch some hats with a hat jack,to get an idea of how I do it.. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nHyyf6R7jqaUorM kzbin.info/www/bejne/gGXdh2yFe69ma7c or forget all this, and have it reblocked a size larger, they might have to put. New sweatband in to do that, so if I want the original sweatband, you’ll need to stretch it. Also, cutting the back seam will help too, after u stretch it, there will be a gap , because u need a bigger sweatband.u can fill the gap in with some scrap leather, If your sweatband is dry and dehydrated, expect it to crack and split, you’ll still be able to wear it though, Also, having the sweatband replaced with a ribbon sweatband will give you an extra size. That’s another alternative

They had a bad CEO who’s embezzling caused them to file for bankruptcy, he was charged, look it up, “ Borsalino bankruptcy “ ..the USA division, “Borsalino USA” went bust, they all went home to Italy..and we lost the line, shortly after , the Italian division crumbled too. this was 2017, but they had already stopped shipping hats in 2016. Eventually, so,some bought the company,they owe many millions of dollars, and the only way they could get back on their feet was to cut corners.. all of them. Now the hats are back,but they suck. The felt is not that same,magical, rollable,soft stuff anymore.. it’s just thin and soft and not at all the same. The quality went way down, and the prices shot up a LOT, the model they used to call “the Beaver” which we sold for $550, now sells for $1,000 and u can buy them anywhere, they’re on Amazon! Back in the days before bankruptcy, there were two places in New York that were able to get the line, is and one religious shop in Brooklyn. Now, they’re just expensive and no big deal. When and if they get back to the old quality, we will start carrying them again. Hold on to yours, those are irreplaceable

Regarding the steam and curling, that's the fur not being felted tight enough. Wool has come a long long way over the years and tech has gone into making wool hats great, but with that fur felt you are showing, you can see how loose the felt is. And it's not about thicker, it's about the felt being tight. I'll do a video on it. You can have a very very thin felt that holds up extremely well if it's felted correctly. It's just lack of want for quality, but want of luxury that's making hats that don't take the rain well. Why not add stiffener? I don't want a stiff hat. I want one that's made right. Depending on the factory, they add stiffening while the body is being made, then add stiffening to a finished hat. For a dress hat if the felt is made tight and thin and it is decatised, it's going to keep its shape, have a better memory and last longer. Making a cowboy hat and making a soft dress hat are very different processes. The issue truly comes from western hat making techniques being used to make soft felts that are meant to be western stiff felts. and take the stiffener out of a western hat and it's... well it's a discussion. I worked on the science of making good felts... no one is trying to make a hat that doesn't last, some people just don't know how to make felts like they did when felt was important to the world.

This brings up the work I want done on my Stetson Temple. We discussed the issues with the brim having a tendency to warp due to its thinness and raw edge. However, I was thinking I'd like to have Van fold 1/4" of the brim edge up and created a welted edge. I was thinking that would create some rigidity around the edge like you have on some of your Borsalino hats that have welted edges, and narrow down the brim a touch at the same time. Is it worth the effort to to it?

Just reflange and stiffen.. he does raw or bound ..but if he gets it..itll be ok
@KTGHATS6 жыл бұрын
Ask for a boatload of stiffener.. reflange. He can basically reblock it stiffer
@scottraymond17896 жыл бұрын
@@KTGHATS Oh, well, I was just going to have Van welt the edge and have you do the stiffening and blocking once it's done like you did for me the last time. It's been getting a bit of warp from all the traveling lately, but you put plenty of stiffener in it. Just a bit of steam, using the hat's weight on a flat table edge, and it looks fine again.

It was a great idea,he just doesnt do welts though, Im happy to fix it. Im sure if u left it,i could cure it..ill use a brim flange & mucho stiffener, im not allowed to use a flange in front of customers for free steamings,but if u leave it..im sure i can get the brim tight and snappy

Kevin why does a hat breed to be brushed anti clockwise?
@KTGHATS4 жыл бұрын
Felt is manufactured that way, like velvet, one way smooths it out,other way it looks messed up, like vacuuming a carpet,or petting a cat the wrong way.. It's how they lay the felt.

@@KTGHATS Kevin ,can you tell me how they get hold of the beaver felt needed to make hats ? And does it involve hunting or farming ?

Kodachrome40 there’s all kinds of companies, the smaller ones in Europe can be amazing, and so can the huge brands, But they all have their high periods and low points...for 20 years I wore nothing but Italian Borsalino felts, and the shop was dominated by 50% of their stuff. Right now is a low period for them, they just crawled out of bankruptcy, they’re cutting corners and raising prices like crazy,”The Beaver” model was $550 four years ago, now they charge $1k!.. who can afford that? I’m just saying, quality ebbs and flows,depending on the financial climate of the particular company,at that time...if u work someplace for 24 years, you become aware of any changes..all of a sudden a hat starts getting returned, the brim curls, felt wrinkling up after one light rain..paper sweatbands painted with leather textured paint, there’s no way u can’t notice changes like that after selling the same item for twenty years.. judge every hat individually,look at how thick the felt is..is the sweatband decent leather? Are there loose threads everywhere? Is the brim crooked? Does the brim snap up and down? There are tons of things u can judge on a felt hat..brand names and catchy words & phrases like “beaver” or “UPF 50 sun protection rating!” lure folks in, the old folks love that UPF rating thing, and the beaver thing gets a lot of folks..these things are almost always irrelevant,in many cases. Thin felt sucks if it’s wool, rabbit or beaver. It’s thin,and doesn’t hold its own weight. I’d rather have a strong wool felt hat that keeps its shape.. than a beaver felt hat that’s thin, w wrinkles,ripples all over...brim curling up all over after the first rain. The very first thing a company does to cut corners is to make the felt thinner, nobody notices, they say it feels soft and luxurious!..it costs the company 50% less to make it,and you wind up buying another one 50% sooner. They make that same hat thicker?..and u buy your next one in 10 years instead of five, their company is 50% poorer. That’s not gonna happen.

You've gat a titch of Lou Reed running in your veins 👍. I enjoy your videos. Thanks for posting. New subscriber. You're inner city, I'm open sky and mountains. I live out west where there's LOTS of felt and straw Cowboy 🤠 hats. QUESTION: I bought a Jiffy Steamer from a man who used it to steam straw hats. OK so far. But, the top of the steamer is covered with small drips/splashes of paraffin wax. How and when (what stage of steaming) is the wax being applied to the straw hat and why?? Also is the wax applied using wax paper or some other source? Please do a VIDEO on this aspect of Hat Steaming STRAW HATS. It would make a great video! 👍💪👍. Please reply in text or video. Thank you.
