Really interesting Doc. Growing up in RI and spending lots of time in Bristol I have seen the boats and the men. Great insight.

Great video. I just started recreational clamming last year in NJ and I'm really surprised at the state of the fishery. Great video to bring awareness not only to clamming, but to the importance of keeping our waters clean for all marine life.

I'm an engineer who happens to be watching clam videos today for no apparent reason. I already designed a simple machine that would mimic your arm actions and I could probably easily run two at a time on a small boat maybe even with double width sized baskets. I would 3d render the human movements over the course of lets say 100 rake sessions. Then run is through AI to generate a script for the simple machine to run the process. Also, would use the auto lifter as they have in place already. Sorting I would need more time to see but its already done automatically at the big plants, would just have to simplify it for a boat sorter of which commercial boats already have.

Problem is you can't, no mechanical help or devices besides a hauler and even that used to be illegal back in the day, good old bull rakers not many still around but love to all that still are. Never met a man with Popeye biceps as them no gym needed. Trust me these if it was legal they would have come up with it long ago these guys are engineers themselves and most never went to college yet some put themselves through it on clamming, every boat and peice of equipment made by hand or someone that they know locally. If you look once and a while the two upright peices of tubing on the gunwale holds the t bar on the rake, on the perfect day that'll do a little work for you as your sorting
