Looks great but I think it takes away from the nightmarish feel that I felt the other had... playing it for the first time under my convers with a raspberry pi and knowing nothing about it was downright scary

I appreciate how much the guy(s) behind this DarkPlaces mod have managed to squeeze out of Quake but I personally would not use this. Some effects look nice but the overall atmosphere just ain't my thing, personally playing Quake with Mark V engine

it's muddy. darkplaces is like an unreal engine 3, its very orange, saturated and contrasty, and the lights are overdone with bloom. it looks like someone did those "This old game that everyone loves is ruined in Unreal Engine, or Unity." it ends up worse than the actual game. normals and bloom arent everything, and no matter how shiny your reflections are, you need to take care of the actual texture.

nice shadows. very doom3 like, which means good. textures sometimes look good and sometimes worse than original, mainly because you can see that it is a tileable texture. The point is not to make the texture just seamless, but to make it also somewhat uniform, without anything sticking out. Our brains detect patterns very easily. Good tileable textures fools the brain into thinking there is no pattern.

This look 3 times better than the original quake, but it seems some people prefer the original 16 bit textures.and less colour. The music is good, but it doesn't sound like quake, it sounds like a mashup of Metroid, IGI and Resident Evil.

The textures are nice, but the game is supposed to have a dark atmosphere. The colored and dynamic lighting and bloom ruin that.

I have to say something right here, right now. I went from 40-50 fps to 100 by turning anti aliasing and anisotropic filtering all the way up. Made my game pretty and also gave it extra fps. what the fuck?

ok so i had this installed for years now, but i just can't stand Quake 1. I'm a Quake 2 fan, I don't play games like the original Doom games. I'm saying this coz i've been playing WRATH Aeon of Ruin that uses the Quake 1 Darkplaces engine, and that game is... Fun to play, but i'm not addicted to it, I just thought I should go back to the original Quake but 2 minutes in i had to quit only to read "press Y to quit like a big loser" haha not funny, Darkplaces!! Now you can sue me but I rather play Daikatana, finished that game once and now I'm finding all of its secrets. It's unfortunate how Amid Evil won't run on my pc.
