Quake is still my number one game, I always have it installed on all my systems, just in case. I remember playing the shareware version million times, back on my Pentium 100MHz, waiting for my local pirate to burn me the whole version. And then came the 3DFX voodoo.... good times

Played these when they came and doing a playthrough of my own atm. Atm going through Hexen II which is built on the Quake engone, but more about solving puzzles to progress rather than just straight up action. Anyway, Quake was a big deal because it was the first true 3D game, unlike all Doom clones which were more... let us call it 2.5D. That is 3 dimensions on a flat surface only. You could not place 2 spaces above or below each other like in true 3D. Some Doom clones, like Duke Nukem, found ways to create the illusion that you did however, but were still just that 2.5D. The creepy and cool atmosphere in Quake is mostly due thanks to two individuals. Sandy Peterson, who was part of the dev team and a HUGE Lovecraft-fan. Since this he's been part of developing editions if the Call of Cthulhu ttrpg and other horror and Lovecraft stuff. The other guy is Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails who made the creepy soundtrack to the game (Hence the NIN logo on the nail crates). The weapon wheel is a remaster feature. Anyway, cool that new people can enjoy these old gems, and not just us older nostalgic nerds.
