This video concerns William Penn and origins of Pennsylvania. Penn, the son of an admiral, converted to Quakerism circa 1660. As Quakers were unwelcome in Restoration England, Penn began planning a "Holy Experiment" in America. Because of his elite connections, and because such a colony served Charles II's interests, he was able to secure a charter.

I love English history, especially the seventeenth century, and this channel is the best for learning about it. Thank you for your work.

The Welsh are always overlooked despite being a large amount of the PA demographic and land owners. The Welsh were the majority ethnicity in PA’s metal/tin industries. Welsh Baptists had whole communities for themselves and built churches. Thank you I enjoyed this.

Hmm, that rings a bell. Wasn’t “New Wales” in the mix? Glad you enjoyed it!

I learned about them the other day after browsing Google Earth and finding names like Bala Cynwyd and Pembroke in Pennsylvania. I found it jarring to find a place named after my home.

@@T_Dun really? The entire USA has 100’s of places named after European cities or people.

@@Carma123 Yes, but if one lives in a village of a few hundred people or near a town of a couple of thousand, in a very quiet part of the world, then a settlement thousands of miles away carrying one's local heritage on is at least interesting, if not surprising. I suppose it shouldn't be surprising, but maybe I'm easily entertained.

@@T_Dun Apparently Welsh Quakers wished to practise freely and in Welsh, so they approached Penn.

I get excited whenever I see you have posted a new video. I love history but am admittedly not any good at explaining or reviewing it. You, on the other hand, are a master.

I too discovered you from TBR and what a delight! You could see Pendle (where George Fox held open air sermons) from my aunt's dining room (in the house where she and my uncle lived from their wedding day to their passing at 89 and 91). I guess my ancestors lurked on the back pew. Anyway, they didn't get on the boat, which I rather regret! The story of pre-revolution colonies is fascinating. What a crazy difficult project they embarked on!

My God father used to take me out on Sundays in his Mini, when I was 8 to to 10. He was an amateur historian, he had no children of his own, ( he was a master carpenter). He tought me a lot about Medieval and Civil War history. Trelleck was once the largest city in Wales, but Black Death and the iron ore running out killed it , but it was the pathway into South Wales for an invading army . Raglan Castle was a Royalist Castle which defended the route into South Wales , They held out for a week until the oxen had dragged the Moaning Minis , two, from Bristol , as soon as the Parliamentary forces had started firing the mortars into the Castle, the Royalists , knowing defeat was inevitable surrendered. I learnt little gems of information from my God father Jim Knight. I think he is my favourite historian, and he was an amateur. Best wishes Mam.

Recently discovered you on a Thomas Reiss Baden video chat Mam. I was impressed by your knowledge of the English Civil War. I expect you know the names Moaning Mini, , a mortar that caused the Royal Defenders at Raglan in Wales to surrender, Humpty Dumpty , a cannon on top of of a tower which when fired fell off with the recoil. The other common statement , when it comes to push , shove. The pikemem fighting each other. These are common usage but few know there origin. My pedantic daemon has also asked me to tell you what was the last Royalist holdout. It was the island of Alerderney , one of the Channel Isles where the last fort put up a decent resistance Best wishes , Mam May whatever God you believe in bless you Post Scriptum. I will be viewing your videos , when I have time.

Oh it’s a great book, Hackett-Fischer really grounds his argument in local English cultures and shows how that translated into the colonial environment.

@@JustineBrownsBookshelf I've read a few sections but I'm going to read the whole thing soon. I think it was Moldbug who first mentioned it years ago when NRX was new. I live in Sussex which had colonists who ended up in Delaware. I imagine they might have been non conformist?

@@davidbaker8483 De la Warre needs his own video. He introduced John Rolfe and Pocahontas into the right circles in England apparently! And I have a cache of beautiful pictures of her… Delaware had a lot of Quakers and other Nonconformists, yes.
