I love Jackie in this! He's almost robotic, except for his super-human ability to always be a step ahead of the other characters... I get this impression, and the movie supports it, that a whole hell of a lot more people would be dead if wanted it to be that way.

What did Quan mean when he said he and Hennessy were nothing alike?

Quan was a soldier in the Vietnam War, but Hennessey, part of the IRA, committed acts of terrorism on innocent civilians not living in war zones, and thought it acceptable (esp. since they kept doing these kinds of bombings over decades), hence the line, "you killed women and children".

He meant that he, Quan, was a soldier, man of honor. And that Hennessey was a terrorist, a murderer. Hennessey was more than willing to kill women and children to achieve his goals, something Quan refused to do.

That they were both soldiers which Quan really was, unlike Hennessy who was just a terrorist. That's why Quan got angry when he was compared to Hannessy.

Quan fought in a war against other soldiers and abhorred killing innocents. To him, Hennessy's actions with the IRA where they knowingly and willingly bombed civillian centers rather than taking the fight to the governments directly makes Quan disgusted when Hennessy tries to insinuate how they are alike.

@@TViper2369 yep I know, but in Ireland every 30 miles is different accents ;) and he´s from Mayo county , there is accent totaly different, btw I worked few years in Connemara, so i heard many of Mayo ppl ;) And i had friends from Derry and soud like them.. but of course ,maybe im totaly wrong ...

@@josefharapes6541 nope. I’m sure you are correct. As an American I don’t know the different accents. But this was an interesting conversation I had with co-workers when I once had to go to Dundee for work. They though myself and another American sounded alike, when in fact I have a southern accent and he has a northern accent. I told them they sounded alike, but they pointed out you could tell a difference in someone who was from 30 miles away. Over the course of that week I started picking it up between the main 3 guys I worked with. One was from Wales, one from Northern Ireland, and one from Scotland. It was definitely interesting as I started noticing it more. Then much more so when my wife and I got to visit Ireland the following year.

@@TViper2369 man, im from Czech rep. and i worked in Ireland for 10 years. Funny fact , originaly I was there for 11month .. but "bang" and 10 years later finally homesick... :D :D :D . Anyway i love Ireland as my second home with all my heart.... Worked first in Limerick co. and after that Connemara (its Galway co. ) and of course evey days OFF i did travel around Ireland , its beautiful country and very nice ppl... Just sometimes i had to realy focus for understanding , what they mean with some words and diferent accents... For couple minutes , but still ;) Just beer is there nothing special :DDDD I mean for a Czech man . BTW thanks for this conversation , made my day ;) Good luck and God bless

Umm, if Ngoc Minh Quan was a soldier for the Americans in the Vietnam War he very much did kill women and children. Or was involved with people who did. Somebody who was a traitorious combatant on the side of a force that napalmed his own civilian compatriots taking the moral high ground really is quite something. Of course, his daughter should not have died. But maybe he should look inwardly a little more. Starting with a little reading up about the My Lai Massacre.
