we did! last year scientists figured out that a compound made with hydrogen, sulfur and carbon works in room temp! (around 15°C/59°F). unfortunately, instead of needing extreme temperatures, it needs extreme pressure to work. about 270 gigapascals to be exact, which is fucking bonkers compared to earth's atmospheric pressure of ~101,000 pascals,, you would need over 2 million times that amount of pressure. it's still very new tech tho so im pretty optimistic about potential commercial uses as it improves over time

When I was in 7th grade I was in Los Gatos and some guys from Silicon Valley showed up saying they had an advancement in superconductors. They did a demonstration with “superconductors”. It was really amazing to see for the first time as a kid. I thought for sure this would completely change societies technology. As a very active skater I couldn’t wait for products like this to be available to the public. I still don’t have my Marty McFly hoverboard and it’s been 38 years!

Probably worth mentioning that the material has to be cooled to -70 Celsius or so at least or else it loses its ability to be a superconductor. Current research is looking for materials which can remain superconductor at warmer temps.

Old thread but this came out after you posted this, a room temp superconductor has been found/made. Check it out, it's going to hopefully open the doors to having an actual hoverboard from Back To The Future real soon. I believe it works up to like 10 degrees C or something along those lines, I know it's above 0 Celsius.
