Hi, I see the book on quantum mechanics by zettili and in my opinion this book is just a copy paste of a great book on the subject written by a french physicist Cohen Tanoudji (a nobel prize laureate). You can check it

This is my order: 1) Quantum Mechanics - Theoretical Minimum By Susskind to build the intuition behind basics of quantum mechanics without going heavy on mathematics. 2) R Shankar for mathematical formalism (just for formalism) 2) Zettili for everything else but once you start getting comfortable with Zettili, it's always good to go back to R Shankar as it is more 'complete'. 3) Modern Quantum Mechanics by Townsend as this feels like Sakurai but is more approachable. Has few advanced material towards the end, but it's worth reading it. These are enough for learning QM up to graduate level. Maybe also supplement the studying by watching videos from "Professor M does Science" as well. I personally feel QM by Griffiths is a let down, especially given Electrodynamics by the same author was such a fantastic book. QM by Griffiths is just meh but the problems are great.

Agree with all of this. Townsend blows Griffiths out of the water for me. I just don't get why people love Griffiths. But I also think his EM book is overrated, so I think I just don't like his style of presentation I guess.

I educated myself using cohen tannoudji vol I,II and some portion of III. Not easy book to go through but I appreciate the hard work from the author. I think chapter are detailed and they tried to compile different topics, however l feel the flow of the content is not very obvious. In any case, rigorous text book in quantum mechanics. Sakurai is okay textbook and dry. R. Shankar is okay. I think Griffith has some issues, he should not shy away using dirac notation. Zetilli is okay in terms exercise problem. In any event, I think Cohen Tannoudi is the best reference for me. I still use this book.

It's a bad idea to choose these fields in India, in fact in US too. These are highly specialised fields, with only a few organisations giving a very small number of positions in the entire India, maybe even in the world. I came across a guy on the KZbin Comments section, who used to work in nuclear engineering sector, but was jobless now because he refused to work on Intercontinental Ballistic Missile. I suppose, Quantum physics is even smaller sector than Nuclear Engineering. At least Nuclear Engineering has scope in Power Sector, Defense and research facilities.

Quantum mechanics is not "a field". Physics is. There are probably between one and a couple of million physicists in the world and they usually don't have trouble finding a job. 90% or more are working in industry, of course. The number of professorships must be in the low ten thousands, the number of faculty positions probably no more than a hundred thousand, or so. You do have to ask yourself, though, whether you really want a faculty position or, worse, a tenured professorship. It's like being a pilot... which is a flying bus driver job. A professor is simply the extension of your high school teacher, except that a professor also has to beg for money all the time to keep his students employed. It's an awfully hard and thankless life for most. High divorce rates, too. I had both research positions and industry positions. Not only do industry positions pay much better, they are also much safer. Less politics as well. Overall a good career choice.
