yup! 100%. this is accurate information! this subject was what really brought me to Buddhism at first, and i studied it heavily! - also, in case anyone's not sure, this is Theravada Buddhism, the earliest and most original doctrines that go straight back to the original Buddha's Sangha over 2500+ years ago. Mahayana and Vajrayana on the other hand, came about only several centuries after Theravada.

Thank you for your insight! It's true that understanding the mind is central to Buddhism. The Buddha's teachings on thoughts, emotions, and behaviors were incredibly profound-he truly was ahead of his time in exploring the workings of the mind and its role in shaping our experience. 🙏

@@robertvann7349 Zen’s statement that "it teaches nothing" is not a literal claim but a method to point beyond intellectual understanding. Zen emphasizes direct experience over conceptual knowledge, encouraging practitioners to transcend dualistic thinking. It doesn’t mean Zen is "based on a lie," but that its approach is to strip away illusions created by the mind, guiding one toward realizing the truth directly.

@@robertvann7349 In Buddhist philosophy, "something" and "nothing" are seen as relative concepts rather than fixed states. Dependent origination explains that all phenomena arise due to causes and conditions; there’s no absolute "something" or "nothing." Instead of one preceding the other, they coexist in a dynamic interplay, and clinging to either concept limits understanding of reality’s interdependent nature.

@@robertvann7349 In Buddhism, life and death are part of the same cycle, governed by impermanence and dependent origination. Neither exists independently nor precedes the other; they arise in relation to one another. Death transitions into life through rebirth, and life transitions into death in a continuous process. This cyclical nature challenges linear thinking about what came "first."

Thanks for this great podcast. Shunyata is a difficult concept to understand. It's also difficult because language is in the domain of dualistic thinking. So describing something that is beyond concepts is difficult. The finger pointing at the moon is not the moon. In essence there are no things. Phenomena arise interdependently. Like a rainbow appearing in the sky, empty of inherent existence, yet appearing. A mirage that is also dependent on a conciousness being present. Is it maybe that conciousness is merely perceiving movements of itself? May all beings realize the ultimate state of enlightenment swiftly, may they have all the necessary help and resources to arrive at the state beyond suffering. 🙏

The interdependence in paticca samuppada is not time-based. It's not a plant arising from a seed. Time itself is an interdependent construct. So space-time, "external" objects , self, or mental construct arise as skandas , interdependent on avijja (ignorance). Without avijja there is no arising (emptiness). In quantum terms, it's like saying that the collapse of the wave function is not happening in space-time nor in consciousness . Both are interdependent on the collapse. Any property measurement which is projected to being part of an object is interdependent on the observer , and the concept of space and time arises from the observer detecting changes. It is not claimed that this is the only possible view, but it is the one that leads to liberation from all attachments.

What are you taking about? The Sun actually demonstrates this concept perfectly through nuclear fusion. In the Sun’s core, hydrogen atoms fuse into helium, releasing energy as described by Einstein’s equation, E=mc². This process converts a small amount of mass into a large amount of energy, showcasing the principle perfectly. I think you might be confusing conversion with destruction of matter (doesn’t happen, as mass-energy is conserved. Or maybe you believe the Sun only emits energy, when, in fact, it is derived from mass.

Buddhism is all about Beings ( with consciousness that can feel or perveive). Quantum physics id all about atoms or subatomic particles.( without consciousness), Physical body of Beings is slso made of atoms and follow the laws of physics . How could you understand and measure the influence of consciousness on atoms or subatomic particles in available ways ?Is it possible?
@BuddhismPodcast
@BuddhismPodcast 15 күн бұрын
That’s a really interesting question. Buddhism focuses on the experience of consciousness and perception, while quantum physics looks at the smallest building blocks of reality. Even though our physical bodies follow the laws of physics, the connection between consciousness and matter is still a mystery. Measuring how consciousness influences atoms or particles isn’t something science can fully do yet, but it’s an exciting area to keep exploring.

That's a great observation! Buddhism's "emptiness" refers to the absence of inherent, independent existence, highlighting interdependence and potential. I do not know whether you have read the Surangama Sutra. Buddha to Ananda : You are learned in all the vast Buddhist teachings with me, but yet to attain Enlightenment. This is because you and others focus your attention, investigation, on physical phenomena, cause and effect, and see them as real. However, the Buddha nature is beyond matter, forms, cause and effect. You cannot reach the formless reality by studying the reality of physical forms and changes. The fifth patriach, Hui Neng, was illiterate. He was sent to the kitchen to do chores, not to study Buddhist knowledge. Hui Neng : My mind is constantly on the reality of self. He had no intellectual speculation, only on the Buddha nature. This is like a Christian meditating on God concept, or Zen monk meditating on nothingness, doing nothing.
@BuddhismPodcast
@BuddhismPodcast 18 күн бұрын
Thank you for sharing this profound reflection! The story of Ananda and the Surangama Sutra beautifully illustrates that Enlightenment transcends intellectual knowledge and logical analysis. As Buddha pointed out, the ultimate reality is beyond forms, causes, and effects-it's formless and non-conceptual, accessible only through direct realization. Hui Neng’s example emphasizes the simplicity and directness of focusing on one’s true nature, bypassing intellectual speculation. This aligns with the essence of Zen practice-cutting through thoughts to rest in the natural awareness of reality. Whether in Buddhism, Advaita Vedanta, or other spiritual traditions, the journey ultimately points to the same truth: experiencing the formless essence directly rather than analyzing its manifestations.

Thank you for bringing this up! It’s true that in quantum physics, the term "observation" refers to measurement or interaction with a system, not necessarily conscious human observation. Einstein theory explains the Relative world but is unable to go any further than that. That's because the mind terminates at that place. Beyond is unknowable. All is mind
@iamserenity89
@iamserenity89 13 күн бұрын
Einstein goes far beyond the relative. Special and General Relativity don’t just describe “the relative”, but revealed the deep, interconnected nature of the Universe. His most famous equation connects matter and energy universally, not just “relatively.” It applies to everything from particle physics to cosmology. He also laid the groundwork for quantum mechanics, even though he was skeptical of some of its interpretations. Also, human cognition is not limited to intuitive or “common-sense” understanding. Yeah, I guess our intuitive grasp might struggle with the counterintuitive implications of relativity and quantum mechanics, BUT mathematical frameworks allow us to explore and describe phenomena that extend far beyond the human experience. For example, concepts like black holes, spacetime singularities, and quantum entanglement challenge our perception but are rigorously studied through mathematics and experimentation. Einstein himself was deeply philosophical, questioning the nature of reality and causality. He recognized that human understanding evolves. The mind does not “terminate”; it adapts and extends through tools like mathematics, models, and technology.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. The intention of the video is to explore parallels between quantum physics and Buddhist philosophy, not to market any particular belief system. Buddhism itself, as a philosophy and practice, is distinct from the actions of individuals or institutions. Issues within hierarchies in any tradition reflect human failings, not necessarily the core teachings. It’s important to separate the timeless wisdom of Buddhism from the imperfections of those who represent it.

@BuddhismPodcast 12 күн бұрын
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Belief is indeed not a measurement, and the Buddha emphasized personal experience over blind faith, as highlighted in the Kalama Sutta. Regarding the comment about the Buddha being ‘overfed and lazy,’ that depiction refers to Hotei, a figure from Chinese folklore, not Siddhartha Gautama. The historical Buddha led a disciplined life of meditation and teaching. Finally, the video doesn’t claim the Buddha worked on quantum physics. It simply draws parallels between Buddhist teachings on interdependence and modern quantum findings, which challenge fixed notions of reality. I appreciate your engagement and hope this clarifies.
