Sounds like Quantumscape is making progress however, what about the cost? Will Quantumscapes solid state battery be cost competitive with Tesla's 4680? If not, it will only be used in very high end models that most people cannot afford. Please comment how cost competitive this battery will be. Hope it works out.

As with any innovation it will be expensive at first obviously. Just because its theoretically cheaper does not mean it will be relatively cheaper at first. Scaling large factories etc. should bring cost down over time. It will be in premium cars first of course given low production and high cost and then later trickle down to other models. Very similar to any other tech in cars so im not too worried about that + entire world is pushing adoption. My prediction at least - my worry is getting the tech into a car in the first place and getting production up and running :-)

Not only tech and cost: all depends on good relationship. The bet is just gain a great deal with a full-scale global car manufacturer: solid state is basically reliable and safer.

it will be more expensive but should end up being cheaper once they scale up. they dont require the same amount of expensive materials and bc of the higher energy density you can utilize a smaller battery pack size. they will be making packs for vw so that should help them get the volumes they need.

I just started investing into this fascinating and new breakthrough opportunity. I wouldn't want to be looking back 10 yrs. from now wishing I didn't take the time to invest into its research and potential. This battery will not suddenly explode in flames like a liquid Core ion lithium battery, and getting safety of the battery in the solid state variety surely made me a believer on top of all the other benefits of its functionality.

there are couple presentations from a year ago that explains how their chemistry works. all they are doing now is going from single cell to multi cell, test production and mass production by 2024.

I'm predicting at least 3 new battery "types" coming to market each year for the next 10 years. Battery developers are all on notice they don't have "years" anymore, they have months to get to market. Not all of those will be for cars but 3 per year in production is my prediction. The good news is some will use different materials and chemistry than the ones we use now. This will help distribute demand for materials to more sources and help keep down costs. Also, each new one won't replace existing types in all cases, in fact most will be "in addition to" what me make now. There is enough demand and use cases to support all types of battery production. Remember, not all of these will be for cars, some will be for other use cases like energy storage.

What do you do about the price of lithium now which costs over $100,000. It renders the entire process cost prohibitive. However, nothing else can replace it.

​@@Parture Exactly, it wasn't a huge problem, just a temporary crazyness. And Sodion-Ion is looking more and more like a real alternative to Lithium-Ion that can take at least some pressure of the demand for Lithium. No reason to use Lithium or NMC in stationary energy storage, Sodium-Ion and LiFePO4 is amazing for this.
