Yes, you CAN put food coloring in the syrup! My grandmother used to make bite sized (really two bites!) green and red balls for our family Christmas party. They looked lovely displayed together on a platter! It is only now that I am older myself that I realize how much effort she put into the things she did to make things extra special for our family!

When I was a kid, a million years ago, our neighbor made popcorn ball for Halloween. She always added a tiny bit of red food coloring to make pink balls. What a treat! We'd always try to visit her house twice, but were only allowed one ball per child! Lol. Thanks for the memories!

Thank you what a sweet memory. I was just telling my husband this morning some wonderful memories of trick or treating as a kid. My next door neighbor made the best popcorn balls for her favorite neighborhood children (pretty much anyone living on our street.). She made them for Christmas too but added chopped up gum drops to the mix. She even enlisted me to help her make these when I big enough to actually be helpful.

Ms Paula, I have so enjoyed watching all your quarantine videos, ESPECIALLY the Halloween ones. I lost my mom 2 yrs ago and your videos make me think of all our old traditions and the old times. Now it’s time to make more traditions for my kids and future grands. Today, for Halloween, I made your Mt Dew Apple Cobbler and oh boy was it a hit out of the ballpark and beyond the parking lot. Thank you for all you do... your laughter and spirit are just the best. Love ya!

Nice recipe. I don't know anyone who doesn't love popcorn balls. Do you remember Jeff Smith (aka 'The Frugal Gourmet')? He had a recipe for Soul-style Sweet Potatoes in his 'Cooks American' book that had an insane amount of sugar (5cups, I think)&a stick or 2 of butter, and when I made it there was always over a quart of liquid left over. We'd reduce it down and make popcorn balls with it. Thanks for sharing your Grandmother's recipe. Happy Halloween to y'all

some candy thermometers have a slider, so you can read the numbers and line up the slider with your target temperature. That way you only need to match the metal slider to the red line.

My mother would make 4- 8 batches every Halloween. That was the treat every one got. and she would color each batch differently. Blue, green, yellow and Pink (red was never red). Everyone in the neighborhood knew that my mom had them every year. such good memories. We would butter our hands when making balls. Mom would wrap them in colored food wrap and tied ribbon at the top.
