The boxed-in, diagonal wooden shaft placed in the wall is a gunport, for shooting out if the stagecoach station was attacked. I don"t think it was ever needed, but the museum volunteers would know.

I had never seen that flag salute either, well, in the USA anyway. Apparently it was called the Bellamy salute and, not surprisingly, was discontinued during WW2. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bellamy_salute
