I wrote a paper on quasicrystals for one of my physics seminar classes this semester. Too bad there isn't more information on these new types of crystals. It's very interesting!

Makes you wonder what else has been dismissed for years as "impossible" or "disgraceful" by the people in charge of major branches of science.

I think it's interesting how even in science we have "believers" and "non-believers". Just doing research is not enough, you have to fight for your research to be taken seriously. So, Nobel prize = genius+effort+strength of character+open-mindedness.

One element that the scientific community should do it eliminate this immature angle of trying to ruin anybody that discovers something new... so lame to see our top scientists acting like mean children on a playground...

valor36az I know right? this was all but ruined by his peers for even daring to contest the current paradigm... his career was all but ruined by pure arrogance... yet a decade later he got the Nobel prize for his work; that alone makes me question the worth of such a prize but moreover, had his peers, at the very least have humoured him, we would all now be at least ten years more advanced in terms of material science. can you imagine razors that never go blunt, tires that never wear out... the possibilities are endless.. but alas, the powers that be do not want that. they want us to all consume consume consume. for what? their profit! which when we have consumed everything (not actually possible) will serve them no good.

Science is a form of believing, very nice. Also you rocked my world with this quasicrystal stuff !

Why doesn't mainstream science realise the world is in the mess it is today because there's only a handful of courageous scientists who are willing to think out of the box.It would be nice to think instead of ridiculing these people they should be supported.

Sir Roger Penrose's work should also be mentioned in this story. He provided a mathematical description on non periodic structures with his Penrose Tiling that predated this discovery.

Same goes for our monetary anti-economy system today. Many ppl react to ZM's proposal with the RBE, a Resource Based Economy as impossible wich ofc is laughable. Once ur trapped inside your box or paradigm it seem's impossible to break out of it with the exception for some brilliant minds and thinkers :))

he was given material to examine.....given by who and what material? This was 100% reverse engineering. he didnt just all the sudden create quasi crystals....This man is a con. A lier. He did nothing but release what he was told to release. Non Human made material slowly leaked into public consumption. This scientist didnt discover or make anything, he just took credit for it.
@BradleyRobinson10 жыл бұрын
***** I'm not clear why you are so critical on this. There is no lie as far as I can see... he simply recognized a crystal pattern from a diffraction of a routine series of experimental test samples, a crystal pattern that should not have been there according to conventions and he was ridiculed by his peers for insisting that he had found ten fold symmetry. This is a really interesting story and it is much more complicated than just what Shechtman found. Naturally occurring quasicrystals were also confirmed found in the 70's by a mining prospector in northern Russia, it turned out to be a fragment of a meteor ( Mathematician Paul Stienhardt on Impossible crystals). My interest stems from working with building blocks in modular construction processes, Phi has long been recognized in architecture and our common building materials are proportioned from these types of patterns. It was from the maths of Roger Penrose that I began to learn about symmetry group theory and non-periodic symmetries, its been a valuable aid that has helped me to better understanding structure and architecture.

Bradley Robinson regardless, who gave him this material. Who created it. How do you just look into a microscope and discover something that shoudlnt exist? Shouldnt the person or groups that created the samples get credit for the discovery? He was given this material to analyze....by who and what material...simple questions with no answers.

I believe it's because belief is an integral part of the person, their perception of themselves and the world around them. You are self-defined by what you deem true, and it is in such personal truth that you, your conscience, your ego, exists. Like in how your answer to any stimulus is defined by your experiences, it is these same experiences that constitute your truths and your beliefs, therefore it constitutes yourself... So, If other people question your beliefs and personal truths, they are questioning what you see as your own very existence, it becomes personal. You'll see that in politics, in science, in art, in religion, in professionalism, in entertainment and so on... And that's the beauty about facts. What you believe or not doesn't matter once it's proven. A fact is a fact, you either learn to accept it and embrace it or you're simply wrong.

Was it wrong of the leader of the group that Mr. Shechtman was part of to leave the group? Yes, that should reflect on that leader or others that act similarly, not the science community in general. Anyone who judges the group by a few become to pot calling the kettle black
@waswestkan12 жыл бұрын
True conservatism in the Science community should never be confused with religion. While it often take time the "high priests" will accept was can be observed. While the high priest in faith often pull a new theory out of their ass & gain converts, they don't deal with what can be observed.

I'm afraid the skepticism of his group is a mental illness of egoism and jealousy that results in ignorance - our science community should be more evolved than it is today simply because of the community's foolishness or perhaps there is a secret plan to hide the truth. How are we ever to continue to discover anything new when those so called colleagues reject unreasonably. Can they not follow the evidence? I believe we are very much behind in our evolution. Keep On Fighting!!
