He wanted letters and for her to come see him at least once. He did not ask for their lives to become just about him being in jail. I am glad that she acknowledged at the end how she failed him.

She was most likely young also and was doing her best to survive physically and emotionally. He didn't need to get into a relationship straight out of prison. He needed therapy/getting his life back on track (e.g. getting away from old habits/destinations/demons that led to him doing time in the first place, seeking a successful pattern/routine) and *then* after a good few years think about settling down, finding Mrs. Right after *properly* integrating back into society. Especially when the woman you are in the relationship with behind bars was just on pen-pal terms to begin with (like you *really* know each other). In all honestly, he just wanted someone to take care of him and provide him food/clothing/housing straight out of jail if his own family or society as a whole would not, there was no *real love* to it. Like a lot of these.
