"Because you saw those headlines and thought one day that might happen to me. And it will Mr. Blair, quite suddenly and without warning." Probably the most prescient words ever spoken by a British monarch to a prime minister. Tony Blair was at the top of his game in 1997. Ten years later he would be at his nadir.
@Luboman411
@Luboman411 2 жыл бұрын
The Queen had seen 10 prime ministers come and go by the time Blair got to her. Even the mighty Churchill suffered that indignity of bad headlines by the end of his second term in 1955. And she saw this first-hand. I do love that the Queen felt comfortable talking with Blair about government business once she wiped that self-satisfied smirk off his face. It's almost like "mummie" had to come over to teach this whippersnapper a lesson in humility. LOL.

It’s so weird that you say that because I honestly thought exactly the opposite. I always found the sort of boisterous, energetic strut that Helen Mirren did as Queen totally took me out of the immersion. Her very energetic and springy walking is especially obvious in this scene when she gets up to look at the sunshine and says they should walk. Way too “athletic” for the real Queen. I think the Crown did a way better job in mannerisms.

Personally I'm not supportive of the Royal family more generally, never quite understood why she was seen so favourably, but I think the one advantage having a hereditary head of state has is that they can be a vessel for a shared national experience. Like her father during the blitz, while as a nation it couldn't individually experience the blitz in London through the King and Queen the nation could. That being the case. however, you spin it, that whole situation with Diana's death was handled poorly and it was the one event that I can think of over my lifetime...although maybe you would also include Aberfan but in my defence I was only 1!... 50 plus years that the nation couldn't relate a shared experience through the Queen.

The people consumed tabloid fodder like candy, leaving no appropriate boundaries at all. The one thing this fictional Blair was right about was that the Queen's legacy was not negatively impacted by Diana's death. In hindsight, the consensus is the Queen, for once, acted as a grandmother first, and a monarch second, and that she was right to prioritize Princes William and Harry.

Her legacy was absolutely affected by her handling of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. The Queen selflessly led the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth for more than 70 years. Really? It conveys the absurdity of a constitutional monarch with no legitimate part to play in the running of the country and the arrogance that comes from a false belief in entitlement. During the historic week referred to, the royals saw how fragile their place in our society actually is. Now, not before time, the wheels are coming off this lumbering vehicle of privilege, and the present incumbent looks like being the last, not as the result of a revolution as has often been envisaged, but by the inevitable process of a system with no relevance in the modern world collapsing in on itself.

Mirren's performance is exquisite. Doesn't get any better. She so finds Elizabeth's spirit. The Diana tragedy was a major wake up call, that I don't think the Queen could properly handle in the moment. Diana's popularity eclipsed her and Charles. Obviously. Blair was right to advise her to come back to London Asap. At that time the fall out cost her. She came off to the people as cold. She rallied round eventually. But It has cost Charles til this day. I'm a Brit who is not a fan of either the British monarchy or of Tony Blair - and yet I cannot imagine the actual conversation they had playing out like this. The representation of Blair is far too insensitive, and the representation of the Queen is far too expressive. This scene is a total nonsense. "Nowadays people want glamour and tears - the grand performance. I'm not very good at that - I never have been". The Queen would never have said anything like this, even if she felt it. And Blair would never have gone in to that meeting trying to dull things down by talking about the Queen's recent international visits. Instead, they would both have greeted each other politely and tackled the issue of Diana's death head on. This is a scriptwriter putting their own thoughts into the mouths of characters in an inauthentic way. This whole scene reads as ridiculously inauthentic.

Helen Mirren is currently starring in 1923, a TV series. Many actors don't like playing the same role more than once. Imelda Staunton is a more believable Elizabeth anyway. Mirren plays a great part, but it's overdramatized. And is the Queen Mum actress from this nearly 20 year old film even still living? She did look more like the real lady.

One bobble does not outweigh 70 years of service - BUT, people did not forget Queen's and the Palace's grudging reaction to Diana's death. Or perhaps more personally, I did not. She was a great Queen, but that doesn't mean she never put a foot wrong.

First of all, after the divorce Diana wasn't a member of royal family anymore. So, expecting any statement from the Queen wasn't justifiable. Since Diana wasn't a member of royal family anymore, so there was no reason to give her a state funeral. Spencers wanted a private funeral. Btw, Queen's grandchildren just lost their mother. Her first duty was to solace her grandchildren. But Blair and his team along with the media stirred up the incident and diverted the blow of public's emotion towards the royal family, especially the Queen.

I am sick of the canonization of “Princess Diana.” She was flawed like everyone else. The British Crown was not responsible for her death. Her boyfriend and his drug and alcohol 🍷 addicted driver were. She only ran away from the press when they weren’t fawning over her.

Her Majesty QEII was definitely a cut above. Duty before anything. I think she handled Diana’s death with great humility and in a very private way. I think it’s sad that the majority wanted to see her blubbering and a wreck. She was never that sort of person.
@IndependentConversations
@IndependentConversations Жыл бұрын
I think the public wanted the house of Windsor to give her the final token she deserved. You have to remember during the divorce negotiations the queen was more than willing to let Diana retain her "hrh" title but in fact Charles lobbied hard to the queen to support the change and keep "princess of wales" which is such a royal contradiction. I do think if this was allowed to be a private funeral, Diana would of done so much damage thar possibly Charles would of never inherited the crown. So the royal family being forced to attend actually all saved their butts, something princess Margaret wrote in a letter not that long after.

I preferred Mirren’s Elizabeth to Colman and Staunton’s Elizabeth’s. She gives a much more experienced and knowledgeable Queen and she honestly felt more like an older Claire Foy who gave a powerful performance as Queen honestly no one could have succeeded her in that role. As for Colman and Staunton, no hate to them, I just didn’t really enjoy their performance as the queen.

As a Canadian, I honestly knew nothing about Tony Blair. I political stance is usually liberal. In Canada, we have for the most part three major parties, being progressive, conservative, liberal, and new Democratic Party, and in Quebec, the block Québecois. I am familiar with your political structure, but not of your leaders. Can somebody please give me a totally unbiassed view of who, and what Tony Blair was all about, thank you.

at this point in her regin she had seen about 10 PMs as Queen and they all had ups and downs and mostly the DOWN is a very quick and fast exit out of office. Popular PMs come and go fast but the CROWN REMAINS . the crown Netflix show plays this out better as the queen speaks to Prince Phillip and other fam about it and they tell her the same thing. Time and Time again a PM will be popular then quickly the people want his head on a pike

Tony Blair was right about one thing. Elizabeth II was more respected, especially after changing the course in Diana's public funeral. Charles will never have Elizabeth's ls credibility and humility. They will always respect the crown but not necessarily the person two different concepts that elizabeth enjoyed high marks. The next generation with William and Kate will probably steer the monarchy into the next 100 years just like she did.
