About the "Procession" intro: from 1973 until mid-1974 "Father to Son" was the concert opener with a tape of "Procession" + that guitar riff as the intro for the band to enter the stage. (They do the intro-from-tape-while-they-enter-the-stage thing on pretty much all their concerts with various songs.) Now they have their new song "Now I'm Here" as opener, so "Father to Son" has a new place on the setlist. -> They left the "Procession" part of the tape as concert intro to go into "Now I'm Here", but of course the part with the "Father to Son" guitar riff goes to "Father to Son".

The intro was a taped guitar from the record, just as a starting point...they didnt have keyboard players untill 1982

That intro is basically a continuation of Procession and like Procession it was taped. As they didn't have anyone to play it they had to do it.

I see some think the intro was a keyboard recording, Brian played it the first time and second time, why use a recording when you have Brian 😂 Great reaction

The intro was a recording of Brian, the mid section was live. :)

Brian designed his guitar for distortion and feedback which was not something that was done at that time. He also designed resonation chambers inside his guitar which also was not done on electric guitars back then. His switches are also different. There are a couple of KZbin videos where Brian describes the design and workings of his guitar. Since he was building the guitar from scratch wanted to include as many possibilities as he could on his instrument. I guess he was pretty satisfied with the end result since he still plays it almost exclusively. The intro probably is guitar because Brian wrote this song and back then, it was very common with Queen that the one who wrote the song was the first instrument that you heard on the recording.

I believe Brian did the arrangements for Procession and God Save the Queen, using the Deaky amp to make his guitar sound like all kinds of instruments. Pretty sure there is a video of him explaining how it was done.

Actually the taped instrument that comes from Procession is a guitar instead of a keyboard. A keyboard would be used for the first time in A Night At The Opera. John wrote a song and wanted Freddie to play the keyboard on it, but Freddie was totally disgusted of keyboards at the time (if he had foreseen his future 😂), and then John had to learn how to play it and he ended up playing it on the track, being the first Queen track with a keyboard.

Queens first 3 albums before a night at the opera had keyboards, unless you don't count a piano as a keyboard, queen didn't use synths till I believe 1981.

I think you'll find that a Hammond Organ was used on Liar on the first album, so that was 1972/73

@@reggiestan I guess my words might not have helped me, sorry for the misunderstanding. I am Brazilian, and some of the ways we call our instruments is sometimes different from the way tou call them. For instance, if we talk about keyboards (that in Portuguese would mean "teclados"), we would basically be talking about an electric instrument.

The intro definitely sounded like tape. The second time around Brian played it on the guitar.

I have always thought the intro was a tape simply because Brian May has to play the big opening chord and he cannot do both the intro arpeggio and the chord as the timing is too tight, but again why bother, is the intro arpeggio that important ? I think BM was obsessesed with perfection at the time.
