Wow I saw Queen live in 77 and 78 at Chicago Stadium and I was 14. I'm still in awe of Freddie and Brian is amazing. I wrote a long email which began by telling Brian a comment was incorrect so I set the writer straight. I never thought he'd read it. In a good mood that day I wrote a funny and engaging note and it was 10 paragraphs. I was shocked he wrote back. He "never reads emails more than a paragraph but he said "you were so funny and engaging I couldn't help but read it" I was shocked he took the time. I was thinking he'd never see it so it was funny, relevant. Even said "hope to meet when in Chicago." He's madly in love with his wife and so proper he was amazingly kind. Mike Myers said he's a very sweet lovely man. Talented, brilliant etc...

@dinger454 The Beatles had the media behind them plus they didn't tour like Queen did. The Beatles were able to produce more records because they toured less. I like the Beatles but I agree, Queen were definitely more talented. What makes me mad is when I hear the same people mentioned when talking about greatness. If you combine voice, stage presence and songwriting, Freddie beats Elvis, Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney and John Lennon. And Freddie definitely beats anyone today.

Freddie had a very posh English accent and you can hear it in Queen songs. For example during 'Too Much Love Will Kill You' the way Freddie sings "torn between your lover and the love you leave behind, you're headed for disaster cause you never read the signs", Freddie's posh accent was very distinct and brought an extra wow factor into his singing.

If you notice on interviews from their early career, Freddie stayed kind of quiet. He never really said much and always let others speak. Something happened along the way...he started to take charge during interviews later on for some reason. I love it though. For me, there isn't enough interviews with Freddie talking. He can talk all he wants! ;D

I can just listen to Freddie speak all day. I love how his normal talking voice gives the opposite expectation as far as vocal capacity goes. He sounds as you'd expect, being a refugee schooled in the UK, but sings better than any of the girls at college X'D. Absolutely smashes the shit out of the entire music scene with his wide repertoire of talent. Someone who not only writes songs, but has written some of the catchiest and most meaningful anthems the world has ever heard. You need to have some understanding of music theory (taught or self-taught) to write a piece of music though you don't need an awful lot of skill to write a piece of music the rest of us would define as an actual piece of music. Many sit just above that margin, whereas others try to produce something really magical. And you don't need a lot of content to make a catchy track. IT IS possible to produce a basic song which is very catchy, like "Imagine" by the Beatles. But it is still very difficult to do! Freddie's tracks would have 2 - 4 times the amount of melodic content of any other competitor and every key sounding justified and resolved, as in it would sound worse if you subtracted, added or moved any note even a tiny bit. That's when you know the guy was playing with every feasible idea imaginable, and his final piece was the result of decades of learning and years of trial and error trying to find THEE best composition humanly possible. The composition which will make him immortal as long as the human race exists. That's why he is a God.

I read about the New Zealand concert in a book written by a friend of the band entitled just , "Freddie Mercury" Yes, in an unusual occurrence, Freddie and a friend who was in town from I think Spandau Ballet (sp) had a full afternoon of drinking. One bottle of Stoli, led to another, and the 2 then went to Fred's room and continued drinking port and a scary combination of liquor and he was so wasted there's no way he could sit to be interviewed. He showed up at the proper time yet couldn't dress himself and they got him dressed. And he went out on time, forgot lyrics and Brian was like "wtf", Roger was "pissing" himself which is laughing and this went on for 1/2 hour. He sobered up but then the friend went on stage to sing Tuti Fruity and forgot words, went up to Brian and mocked funny lewd motions. Brian still had that WTF? Look. Show good from then on. The band avoided New Zealand afterward. Freddie was probably embarrassed since he is such a professional. I'd love to see that!!!!

You're right when you wrote that America missed out on them due to lack of airtime. I've been following Queen since the mid '70's or have tried too. It was very difficult because back in the '70s there was no youtube, no internet, no cable, there was nothing but only radio. And my town's radio stations hardly ever played Queen. I couldn't get any information on them. It pissed me off because I loved Freddie's voice and I thought Roger was the cutest guy. :) So thank God for youtube.

@cortadew I respect your opinion. The word "musician" covers such a wide range. IMO Freddie & Elvis had the best voices in music, great quality vocals. But Elvis did not write songs. Even though Michael, Paul & John wrote classics (mainly Paul & John), they did not have great quality vocals. Freddie had a great quality voice & he solely wrote many classics. Not only did he write the lyrics but also the music to accompany the lyrics.

What really annoys me is the press support nowadays of the useless drivel that is churned out on these utterly stupid talent shows. if Queen had the press behind them instead of against them, they would undoubtedly be the biggest band the planet has ever seen. 4 genius musicians. 4 extremely intelligent people and4astute business man. When does that ever happen in a rock band. Queen quite simply should have blown away the Beatles as they have more talent. Queen do and will always rule.

But... they've cut Freddie in the middle of the sentence at the end of the interview, when it started to get funnier! He started to lose himself in his own thoughts! 😄

because he has a lot of important things to say! and that's good! I don't think that he's trying to steal the attention in any way, he just comes up with good things. And remember that Freddie is the world's most charismatic singer ever, so I think he naturally wants to speak a lot.

It seems there was something on Freddie's mind when he refered to "wealth." I think he said the question was very delicated and it can be asked separately. His comments made me realize that there was, in fact, an disagreement between Roger and Freddie for the loyalties on Bo Rah & IILWMC. Supposibly, Roger wanted to share equally the loyalties because his song was released with Bo Rah as a B-side, but Freddie found that unfair because his song was the reason of the success.

Queen were getting slagged by the press for touring Sun City during this era. In other words, every music/news journalist was out to get them and I don't think Live Aid had occurred yet so they had hit a somewhat of a wall in terms of relevance of the band.

@Yo1969Yo well the people you refer to had different history in music they sang different styles and had different views of life. They were all masters of their game but for me and i think for very many people a totally different game for each and every one of them. Can't compare a glorious glam rocker with a pop king a rock'n'roll king or two rock pioneers, it just doesn't work that way. Great musicians all of them and their music will live on forever.

@NScole6407 No, he's not preventing himself from the smoke :) That's Brian - he was the only non-smoker in the band and he got used to live with another 3 smokers :)

@MrNotyag Freddie did speak the truth. He said you can be happy in certain areas. He is talking about being wealthy & successful in the music business.
